    The Center for Engagement, Environmental Justice, and Health (CEEJH, INC) is a new nonprofit focused on helping communities impacted by environmental, climate, and energy injustice with a focus on the Mid-Atlantic region, the Southeast, and other parts of the United States. CEEJH, INC provides technical assistance and capacity-building support to help impacted communities address environmental racism, environmental classism, oppression and related health inequities by following the 17 Principles of Environmental Justice and through INpowerment Science and Liberation Science. CEEJH, INC continues the vision of Dr. Sacoby Wilson, one of the nation’s leading environmental justice researchers, scholars, and advocates to advance environmental, climate, and energy justice through service and the authentic engagement of local grassroots environmental justice organizations in community centered, justice-focused applied action-oriented solutions science. CEEJH, Inc is about dismantling racist systems, developing cross-sectoral partnerships, and demanding change to ensure that frontline and fenceline communities receive the recognitional, procedural, distributional, and restorative justice that they deserve.

    Position Overview

    CEEJH, INC is looking for candidates who are well-organized, self-directed, and committed to excellence. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Associate Director has both internal and external facing responsibilities. The Associate Director partners closely with the Executive Director to chart strategic responses to organizational challenges and plays a critical role as advisor and strategic thought-partner for the Executive Director. The Associate Director also works to create high engagement from staff, board members and partners to resolve day-to-day issues before they reach the Executive Director. The Associate Director plays a critical role in shaping and implementing the organization’s strategies and growth, including oversight of programs, operations, grants, and financial management. The Associate Director will also be involved in fundraising and development efforts as well as communications with donors, the public and the media.

    The right candidate will be a mission-focused and strategic leader with experience developing a culture of learning, accountability, and continuous improvement among a group of diverse, talented individuals. They must be independent, highly organized, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a keen attention to detail, while able to effectively manage multiple projects, budgets and staff. Applicants should be an environmental justice leader as well as understand non-profit financial best practices, human resource best practices, non-profit regulatory compliance and a solid understanding of office and information technology.

    The Associate Director is expected to do the following:

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    General

    • Leads oversight of all CEEJH INC programs
    • Acts as liaison between Director and CEEJH INC staff
    • Strengthens organizational culture
    • Acts as spokesperson for the organization when required, such as in coalitions with key allies and in key forums
    • Assists with all aspects of fundraising and development

    Organizational Leadership

    • Provides effective leadership by being actively involved in programs, developing a broad and deep knowledge of their purpose, role and contributions to the organization
    • Serves as an advisor and co-strategist to the Executive Director, providing sound counsel and confidential feedback
    • Ensures CEEJH programming and internal culture, policies and practices align with the organization’s mission, vision, and organizational values
    • Works closely with the Director of Operations to provide a supportive day-to-day leadership presence for staff
    • Reviews and approve deliverables such as work plans, external communications materials, and grants proposals

    Planning

    • Enhances fundraising abilities of the organization including: identification and analysis of grant opportunities, support fundraising activities, and representing the organization at external fundraising events and meetings as needed
    • Oversees and evaluates success and challenges with current programs and projects
    • Develop long-term strategic vision for organization

    Financial Management

    • Assists with the annual budgeting process, including work with the MSC team, manage effectively within the organizational budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered
    • Oversees long-range strategic financial and budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with the strategic plan

    Supervision

    • Develops staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: delegates role and responsibilities; sets objectives; establishes priorities; and monitors and evaluates ongoing progress toward goals and overall performance
    • Manages, inspires, and empowers the team
    • Promotes a positive organizational culture
    • Provides mentorship and guidance, and alleviate and address individual and group concerns as needed

    EXPERIENCE

    Minimum

    • High School Diploma or an Associate’s degree (MS degree preferred) and 10+ years of experience in environmental justice related programming such as the following fields:
      • Non-Profit Management
      • Health Education
      • Environmental Education
      • Public Health
      • Health Literacy
      • Health Behavior
      • Environmental Justice
      • Environmental Health
      • Health Disparities
      • Community Health
      • Communications
      • Journalism
    • 8+ years of nonprofit experience or training with knowledge in grants management or grants administration
    • Excellent time management & organizational skills and ability to balance multiple projects
    • Experience in/Familiarity with human resources policies and procedures and/or with compensation and benefits
    • Supervision of staff
    • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills
    • Proficiency in MS Office suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, MS Teams, etc.)
    • Experience handling confidential information with high level of discretion
    • A friendly, collegial personality with excellent integrity
    • Excellent command of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and composition
    • Highly organized and detail oriented
    • Must be team-oriented, independent thinker, and collaborative
    • Ability to work under stressful conditions, and experience working in a deadline-driven environment
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

    In this role, the employee may be required to supervise other employees.

    EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

    Standard days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily schedule is flexible within the proximity of this time frame, and will be decided in consultation with the supervisor. This job may require working in the evenings and weekends including work related to trainings, workshops, technical assistance activities, and the annual CEEJH EJ symposium.

    TRAVEL

    Occasional domestic travel may be required for trainings, workshops, technical assistance activities, conferences, and symposia.

    LOCATION

    This role will commence with remote work and will move to a hybrid role with 1 to 2 days in office a week when CEEJH, INC secures an in-person office in the Washington, D.C. area in the near future.

    COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

    • 100%FTE, exempt position. Annual gross pay is $120,000 to $150,000 (Salary Negotiable)
