HIF Overview

The Housing Industry Foundation (HIF) seeks a dynamic, strategic and passionate leader as we enter a new and exciting era of growth built on our proud history of homelessness prevention and transforming community shelters.

For over 35 years, HIF has assisted thousands of families remain in, or return to, stable housing through our Homeless Prevention Programs. In partnership with over 80 service agencies and community based organizations, HIF is able to evaluate and qualify recipients for emergency housing grants, identify priority renovation needs for shelters, and assist teachers, non-profit and other public sector workers secure affordable housing.

HIF’s history and support is firmly grounded in the Multifamily Housing Industry leveraging the resources, relationships and expertise of owners, vendors, general contractors and suppliers which help extend the impact of donor contributions including: Preventing over 22,000 individuals from experiencing homelessness, renovating over 130 shelters and transitional housing organizations and placing over 100 community workers into affordable housing.

Position Overview

HIF is seeking a passionate, skilled, strategic, pragmatic, and inspiring leader who is dedicated to serving our communities and building upon our strong organizational culture and impact.

The Executive Director (ED), reporting to the Board of Directors, works in partnership with the Board and Managing Director to ensure the direction and successful organizational outcomes of HIF. Managing a $4 million + budget, the ED leads the staff to implement the organization’s strategic priorities and achieve its annual goals. The ED oversees financial management, overall organizational and stakeholder health, fundraising, and tracking and promoting impact. The position also represents the HIF publicly to Bay Area communities, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning & Organizational Oversight

• Engage necessary stakeholders including Board and Staff leadership and outside resources to ensure the successful, focused and effective planning and implementation of HIF’s next strategic plan and annual goals
• Recommend, implement and report on performance goals and metrics and track, analyze, and report on performance outcomes regularly to achieve annual and long-term program, fundraising and strategic goals

Development, Public Relations and Relationship Management

• Oversee the successful implementation and execution of an annual development plan and on-going resource cultivation
• Ensure robust and sustained prospect development to codify an immediate and long term pipeline of support for HIF
• Lead the Major Gifts Committee and manage the development and recognition of existing, new and potential donors aligned with HIF’s current, mid and long term goals
• Working closely with the Development Manager and the Executive Committee, strengthen Board and Donor relationships to realize traditional philanthropic opportunities and new, creative revenue streams and donor prospects
• Ensure HIF develops and implements an on-going and consistent marketing plan that celebrates and focuses how we communicate HIF’s impact, program outcomes and acknowledgement of key partners, donors and stakeholders
• Ensure outreach to past, current, and potential donors as a key part of HIF’s development process and culture, and effectively leverages HIF’s CRM platform and database
• Serve as the lead spokesperson for, and represent the organization, at events and conferences to increase the awareness and visibility of HIF
• Serve as the organization’s chief liaison with donors, community based nonprofit leadership, Board companies and government agencies

Board and Staff Leadership

HIF’s Board of Directors represents a significant cross section of leaders and companies from the Multifamily Housing Industry. They collaborate closely with the HIF staff, and ED in particular, on strategy and fundraising and serve on our key committees. The Board Members are great advocates and supporters of the ED, the staff and the organization and are essential to HIF’s success :

• Manage and co-lead with the Board President, Managing Director and HIF’s Board of Directors on matters related, but not limited, to the health and progress of HIF and it’s strategic plan, financial management and fundraising, Board recruitment and development and constituent engagement
• Responsible for planning and executing Board meetings and lead, or co-lead, all Board, Major Gifts, Events and Engagement Committees
• HIF’s Managing Director reports directly to the Executive Director and acts as a partner in the overall success and management of HIF. All program, operations and development/events staff report to the Managing Director, providing the ED with maximum focus on strategy, fundraising and relationship management

Financial Management & Compliance

Working with the Managing Director and Board Treasurer/CFO:

• Develop and submit to the Board of Directors an annual budget recommendation that aligns with the organization’s strategic priorities
• Monitor, track, and analyze revenue and expenditures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and provide regular reports to the Executive Committee, Board and stakeholders as needed
• Support the completion of an annual financial audit by an independent audit firm and present findings to the Board
• Approve and support operational plans and business processes in the areas of financial reports, program services to clients, payroll, resource development, and record keeping
• Ensure the organization is compliant with all federal, state, and local regulations, and donor requirements

The above is a general outline of the Executive Director’s scope of work. Additional duties and tasks may be needed in order to support HIF’s programs, Team and its various stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Leads with a commitment to, and a passion for, serving the community and channeling HIF’s resources, programs and relationships to prevent homelessness and to support community shelters and transitional housing programs
• Demonstrated ability, enthusiasm and comfort with balancing the unique opportunities, needs and relationships relative to the Multifamily Housing Industry and the communities HIF serves
• A self-starting, positive, and supportive leader who prioritizes enhancing and building upon HIF’s strong culture, programs and 35 years of relationships and outcomes
• Minimum of 10 years of senior-level management experience and at least 3 years of executive experience required. A background in both the nonprofit and private sector background is preferred with a demonstrated record of success in generating support from corporations, foundations, individuals, and special events
• A strong networker who builds relationships across diverse groups of individuals and industries with demonstrated success at developing and leveraging community relationships and partnerships
• Experience in implementing programs that align to strategic plans with a proven track record of achieving annual goals, assessing and improving operations and processes to sustain growth
• Strong financial and budgeting skills and experience and comfort level with technology, including Salesforce

COMMITMENTS FROM HIF

The salary range for this position is $160,000 - $175,000
