Our signature prevention program, the STEP Fund, provides interest-free microloans to those at imminent risk of eviction. Our mission is to empower residents of LA to prevent homelessness before it begins.

    Job Summary

Better Angels is seeking a detail-oriented Collections Specialist to join our STEP Fund team. This role is crucial in managing repayment tracking, increasing repayment metrics, processing deferrals, and ensuring smooth documentation within Salesforce. The Collections Specialist will work closely with the Director of Prevention and the Client Engagement team to facilitate the loan process and maintain strong client relationships.

    Ideal Candidate Profile

You're a go-getter who brings energy, creativity, and compassion to the table, all while helping clients find the best solutions for their financial challenges. You have experience working with marginalized or low-income communities and are driven by the mission to connect individuals with the resources they need to get back on track. With your excellent communication skills and problem-solving mindset, you’re able to build genuine relationships, even in tough situations. If you’re passionate about helping people while staying focused on results, and you thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment—this is the role for you!

    Key Responsibilities

    • Track client repayments and manage the loan repayment lifecycle, including processing deferrals and updating records.
    • Review loan accounts / aging reports to evaluate and determine action plans for past due accounts.
    • Contact clients regarding outstanding balances.
    • Provide guidance on loan details, payment plans, public assistance benefits and financial literacy courses.
    • Work with the finance team to reconcile loan payments.
    • Ensure accurate and timely data entry of client information, documents, and repayment up to date in Salesforce.
    • Monitor loan performance and identify any potential issues or client concerns.
    • Assist in uploading and organizing documentation in Salesforce, ensuring all client interactions and communications are logged accurately.
    • Provide insights and recommendations for process improvements based on client feedback and operational observations.
    • Actively engage with clients to enhance repayment rates and metrics.
    • Connect clients experiencing difficulties to our Post-Loan Support Specialist for additional assistance.
    • Support our overall Prevention operations.

    Qualifications

    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, business administration, social work, or a related field.
    • Experience: 2+ years in payment processing, financial services, or case management, particularly with at-risk populations.
    • Knowledge of Salesforce, Megasys, G-Suite, and Microsoft Excel is essential.
    • Familiarity with budgeting and financial planning concepts preferred.
    • Understanding of issues related to homelessness and trauma-informed care is a plus.

    Work Environment

The Payment Specialist will primarily work remotely, with occasional in-person meetings and events throughout LA County. Flexibility and adaptability to future in-person work requirements may be necessary.

    Salary

$60-$70k salary, Non-Exempt Regular Full-Time. Compensation package including majority-paid medical and dental and unlimited vacation and sick time.

    Probationary Period

A probationary period of 90 days will apply to all new hires, during which performance and fit within the team will be evaluated.
