    Down Home North Carolina (DHNC) is seeking a full-time Statewide Climate Campaign Coordinator to lead collaboration across diverse organizations within the climate justice movement. This full-time position will strengthen statewide coalitions, influence the equitable distribution of federal climate funds, and advocate for community-driven solutions to address climate challenges.

    The Coordinator will be responsible for coalition management, campaign strategy, communication, and organizational leadership, and the management of an internal Climate campaigner position. This role will be housed at Down Home North Carolina, working both to support our local issue campaigns while advancing the shared goals of our statewide climate coalition, which includes the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI), Climate and Jobs Roundtable, NC Black Alliance, Appalachian Voices, Blueprint NC, and Red-tailed Hawk Collective, among others. In addition to general campaign strategy, the coalition partners will work together to hire six community organizers. These organizers will conduct on-the-ground outreach, gather community input, and support local events.

We move North Carolina toward the values of dignity, safety, and inclusion through leadership development, strategic campaigning, multiracial movement building, and civic engagement that advances positive, life-changing reforms for rural communities.

    Founded in 2017, Down Home has built a strong organizational track record, including:

    • Helping to elect the first Latinx state legislator in NC history
    • Winning Medicaid expansion for more than 600,000 working Carolinians
    • Growing a statewide membership base that includes all 100 counties of North Carolina
    • Establishing member-led chapters across 9 counties, stretching from mountains to sea●
    • Anchoring the first southern, rural deep canvass and race-class narrative tests
    • Holding and growing statewide coalitions to fight for a just COVID-19 recovery, community investment, and fully funded public schools

    Responsibilities

    1. Coalition Coordination and Development
    • Facilitate collaboration among coalition partners, ensuring effective governance and decision-making.
    • Organize and lead regular coalition meetings (virtual and in-person).
    • Act as the primary liaison between coalition members, funders, and stakeholders.
    • Develop outreach strategies to engage underrepresented communities in climate advocacy.
    1. Campaign and Communication Strategy
    • Lead campaigns to influence the equitable implementation of federal climate funding, including the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) and Solar for All programs.
    • Mobilize community voices and grassroots organizations to advocate for climate justice.
    • Develop public education and outreach campaigns to build awareness of funding opportunities and climate solutions.
    • Ensure the coalition’s strategies prioritize racial equity, labor inclusion, and intersectional collaboration.
    1. Project and Staff Management
    • Manage multiple projects, ensuring timely execution of goals.
    • Manage and support Down Home’s Climate Campaigner in their work on local federal implementation issue campaigns
    • Develop impact reports and policy recommendations for funders and policymakers.
    1. Community Engagement and Advocacy
    • Collaborate with the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ), Self-Help Credit Union, and other institutions to guide climate fund distribution.
    • Build relationships with decision-makers, including advisory boards and state leadership.
    • Advocate for community benefit agreements (CBAs) and workforce development initiatives.
    1. Staff and Organizational Development
    • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture aligned with Down Home NC’s mission.
    • Support staff and coalition members in building leadership capacity and campaign skills.

    Qualifications

    Required Skills and Experience

    • Coalition Building: Proven ability to build and maintain trust among diverse stakeholders.
    • Organizing and Facilitation: Expertise in community organizing and collective decision-making processes.
    • Project Management: Experience managing complex, multi-partner projects with competing priorities.
    • Campaign Strategy: Demonstrated success in developing and executing advocacy campaigns.
    • Communication: Strong verbal and written skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
    • Climate Justice Knowledge: Commitment to climate justice and familiarity with North Carolina’s climate policy landscape.

    Additional Skills

    • IT proficiency, including familiarity with organizational platforms.
    • Innovative problem-solving and independent decision-making.
    • Dedication to equity and inclusion, particularly in underrepresented communities.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in climate justice organizing, grassroots leadership, or frontline advocacy.
    • Familiarity with labor movements and anti-racist organizing.

    Required skills and experience:

    • Organizer mindset: Committed to grassroots organizing and is grounded in the importance of building a multiracial movement. Is willing and able to build relationships quickly, have strong follow ups, and move people to action. Is willing to take chances, solve problems creatively, and independently. A determination to succeed and build power. Previous experience as an organizer or a grassroots leader is preferred but not required.
    • Fundraising chops: Displays a familiarity with the world of philanthropy and charitable giving.
    • Willingness to learn: Be willing to learn and/ or adjust organizing techniques. Be able to take coaching from managers and integrate advice into your work areas. Listen to community members and leaders to better understand their communities to ensure that the program is the most effective it can be on the local level.
    • Team player: Be able to contribute to a growing and fast paced team. Be able to take directions well and also be willing to contribute by offering feedback and suggestions to co-workers and management. Offer support to teammates and be able to ask for help when needed.
    • Systems builder: Demonstrated ability to translate a vision into an effective program that gets results. Ability to create and document systems, practices, and standards from scratch and that can be used (and modified) for years to come.
    • Independent worker: Be able to manage multiple projects at one time. Meet deadlines and hit metric goals. Ensure that numbers are reported on time with data integrity at thetop of mind.
    • Attention to details and be able to provide thoughtful solutions to problems that arise. Be able to work in a fast paced environment where work areas are expected to change frequently.
    • Trust builder: Ability to establish credibility and respect with colleagues, and an understanding of how to build strong, long-term relationships. Build relationships with staff, members, donors, contractors, and stakeholders. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds.
    • Mission alignment: Committed to the vision of a powerful, inclusive, rural, multiracial, working-class movement-building as a path towards liberation for all people. Is aligned with the idea that building power takes both election programs and long-term base building and investment in communities.

    Personal or professional experience living in rural communities, living in the South, rural organizing, and/or organizing in the South are a plus but not required.

    Some irregular hours are required, including nights and weekends. Work location is flexible within North Carolina. Please note that a significant portion of work will be in person.

    Applicants must be able and willing to travel regularly for work. Compensation for this full-time staff position is determined by the candidate’s level of experience and ranges between $74,739 - 86,237 annually, including best-in-class health coverage, retirement, sick, vacation, and other benefits. Domestic partners, and spouses are eligible for dental, health and vision insurance the first day of the month following thirty (30) calendar days after the Employee’s hire. The Employer pays 100% of all premiums.

    Applicants must be able and willing to travel regularly for work. In-person work will be required. This position reports to the Senior Campaign Strategist.
