Community service volunteers on an urban farm in Brooklyn, NY.

Since the launch of the Idealists in Action newsletter, our team has received hundreds of emails from people around the world who are excited about making a positive difference in their communities. Some folks share the activities they’re already doing to build a better world, while others are saying they want to start taking action, but aren’t sure how.

For this reason, we thought it’d be great to compile some of the community service tips and initiatives from our newsletter subscribers. Our hope is that their words, passion, and actions can inspire others to finally do that thing they’ve been itching to do: start that social-impact project, sign up for a volunteer opportunity, or join that community group.

Here are just a few community service ideas we’ve received via email. Hungry for more? Let us know in the comments, and we may share a Part 2!

“One cause close to my heart is education, especially for girls. In many places, girls are still not given equal opportunities to study or work, and I believe education is one of the most powerful tools to change that. I can teach various subjects, and I also enjoy cooking, singing, and dancing. I hope to use these abilities in ways that bring joy and value to others.”

— Mansirat K., Murcia, Spain

If you’re inspired to take action for education like Mansirat, here are some volunteer opportunities to get involved:

“I have really improved in my crochet skills! I am still working on perfecting the skill to my level best. I would like to crochet Kenyan-inspired things and be able to uphold my culture.”

— Linah M., Nairobi, Kenya

Using your hobbies for community service is a great way to blend passion with volunteerism. Here are some ways to share your skills with the world:

"Thank you for sharing the Idealists in Action newsletter—it really made me reflect on how I can use my passions to create community. For starters, I’m going to start hosting a book club with friends!”

— Dina B., Philadelphia, U.S.

You don’t have to sign up for an official volunteer opportunity to make a positive impact. Spend time with friends or neighbors through community service with help from these Recipes for Action:

“As a final-year nursing student, I am passionate about health, elderly care, and community well-being. I want to dedicate some of my time to volunteering where I can both learn and give back, especially in areas connected to public health and supporting vulnerable groups.”

— All Sharia S., Bangladesh
