Ethics and Decision Making When Leading Volunteers

Tuesday, June 9th | 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern

We've all been there - you're in a difficult situation with a volunteer and you don't know what to do. Sometimes it's just a situation where you can't make everyone happy, but sometimes you're in an ethical dilemma - torn between two or more of the core values for leading and managing volunteers. How do you know if you're in an ethical dilemma, and what should you do to ensure that you make the right decision? Join Faiza Venzant, CVA, Executive Director for the Council for Certification in Volunteer Administration and Jennifer Bennett, CVA to learn about those core values and how to incorporate ethical decision making into your work. This highly interactive session will help you think through a real ethical dilemma faced by a leader of volunteers, and practice the steps needed to implement this practice in your own work.

Back to Basics Workshop Series

In this workshop series you'll have the opportunity to take a look at the foundation pieces for volunteer engagement in your organization. We'll explore what work is currently being done by volunteers, and what work could, or should, be done by volunteers. And, we'll discuss how policies and expectations for how volunteers, paid staff, and clients interact can create an environment that supports and celebrates that work.

Each of these workshops will build on the content in the previous sessions, if you aren't able to attend live please plan on reviewing the previous recordings before attending a session.

Back to Basics: Planning for Volunteer Engagement

Tuesday, July 14th | 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern

How you plan for volunteers is the first step for successful volunteer engagement. This workshop will help you walk through what work is currently being done, what work needs to be done, and where and how that work is getting done by volunteers. If you have existing position descriptions for volunteer roles you may want to review them before joining us for this session. Each of these workshops will build on the content in the previous sessions, if you aren't able to attend live please plan on reviewing the previous recordings before attending a session.

Back to Basics: Designing the Work

Tuesday, July 21st | 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern

How volunteer roles are designed can either set volunteers up for success, or build in frustration from the start. This workshop will help you think through the work volunteers do, and help you create appropriate responsibilities and accountabilities for each role. Each of these workshops will build on the content in the previous sessions, if you aren't able to attend live please plan on reviewing the previous recordings before attending a session.

Back to Basics: Creating the Framework

Tuesday, August 4th | 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern

Once we know what work volunteers are going to do, we need to create a framework for how those volunteers will work with paid staff, clients, and each other. In this workshop we'll explore the policies, procedures, and codes of conduct that help volunteers and those that work with them to collaborate, communicate, and solve conflicts effectively. Each of these workshops will build on the content in the previous sessions, if you aren't able to attend live please plan on reviewing the previous recordings before attending a session.

Back to Basics: Putting the Pieces Together

Tuesday, August 11th | 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern

In this final workshop in the Back to Basic series you'll have the opportunity to explore how all of the previous workshops come together to create a strong foundation for volunteer engagement and impact-driven volunteer work. From here you may want to explore previous, recorded workshop series on topics like recruitment, or relationship building. Each of these workshops will build on the content in the previous sessions, if you aren't able to attend live please plan on reviewing the previous recordings before attending a session.
