    Description

Environmental Ambassadors Program Mentors: Journalism & Outreach

Environmental Leaders of Color (ELOC) is a non-profit organization that teaches youth about climate change, encourages and provides young people with opportunities to enter climate-related fields, and offers community members with strategies to survive in a climate destructive world. Its Environmental Student Ambassador Program gathers teams of students from participating high schools—including Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and Port Chester—to learn about hazardous household materials and the importance of clean drinking water. The teens will then perform outreach, present informed research, design graphics, and more. We are seeking volunteers of all ages to express their interest in joining this project and helping us advocate for a safer water system.

Volunteers with journalism, article-writing, and/or outreach knowledge are needed to help guide a small team of high school students (3-5 students) through their projects in this program. This will likely include supporting the student team in writing articles about the campaign to send to local news outlets, and learning how to expand their outreach to their community through writing.

The SEA Program is a great way to get involved with your local communities/youth and spread awareness - or learn something yourself - about water quality and safe drinking water. Water crises are real and happening right here in NY, and it's critical to bring these issues to the forefront of our minds and rethink our relationship with water.

    Volunteer requirements:

    • Age 18+
    • Must enjoy inspiring and working with high school students
    • Experience in the aforementioned field(s)
    • An interest in water quality and environmental justice a bonus and always welcome

    Time commitments:

    • The program meets virtually twice a week for about an hour on Thursdays and Fridays during the school year. As a mentor you may be expected to attend these meetings and help students with their assignments.
    • Express any availability between the months of August 2024-June 2025; availability is accepted on a rolling basis.
