    Description

The Dream Unfinished Orchestra is seeking passionate, committed individuals to join our Board of Directors. As a board member, you will play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of the organization, ensuring its sustainability, and amplifying its mission. We are particularly interested in individuals with experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, marketing, social justice advocacy, the arts, entertainment law, community organizing and/or community engagement.

    About The Dream Unfinished:

The Dream Unfinished (TDU) is an activist orchestra that brings attention to social justice issues through classical music. Founded in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, since 2015, we’ve used the power of music to amplify voices and create dialogue around racial and social justice and other pressing societal challenges.

Featuring people of color in the orchestra, in the music, and behind the scenes, this is an orchestra that truly looks and sounds like New York City, with audiences described by WQXR radio host Terrance McKnight as “among the most diverse” in classical music. Our leadership has been in regular demand in panels and workshops on anti-racist practices in classical music; TDU members have also led workshops with educators, young musicians, and arts administrators, sparking industry-wide conversations on diversity, equity, inclusion, and authentic community and civic engagement. Our work and mission have been profiled in publications such as the New York Times and the New Yorker.

    TDU’s programming includes:

    • Orchestral performances featuring activists, speakers, and music centered around a social justice theme
    • Pop-up chamber concerts promoting civic engagement, voter registration, and community health in NYC
    • Commissions of new works by classical composers of color
    • Decentralized campaigns uplifting the legacy of an overlooked classical composer of color, in partnership with local and national partner organizations, ensembles, and institutions
    • Consultations and residencies exploring best practices for programming contemporary, social justice-driven classical music

    Responsibilities:

    • Governance: Participate in the oversight of the organization's operations, ensuring that we adhere to our mission and maintain fiscal responsibility.
    • Fundraising: Assist in developing and executing fundraising strategies. Cultivate relationships with potential donors and sponsors. There is no specific giving requirement for board members.
    • Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development and implementation of long-term strategic goals, focusing on both artistic and organizational growth.
    • Advocacy: Serve as an ambassador for The Dream Unfinished, promoting our mission and expanding our reach within the community and beyond.
    • Commitment: Attend regular board meetings (quarterly) and special events, and participate in committee work as needed.

    Qualifications:

    • A deep commitment to social justice and the arts.
    • Experience and expertise in nonprofit governance, fundraising, entertainment or strategic planning.
    • Strong connections within the arts, social justice, or philanthropic communities.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
    • Ability to commit time and resources to board activities and initiatives.

Location: Remote (with occasional, optional in-person meetings in New York City)

    Term Length: 3 years (renewable)
