The Dream Unfinished (TDU) is an activist orchestra that brings attention to social justice issues through classical music. Founded in response to the Black Lives Matter movement, since 2015, we’ve used the power of music to amplify voices and create dialogue around racial and social justice and other pressing societal challenges.
Featuring people of color in the orchestra, in the music, and behind the scenes, this is an orchestra that truly looks and sounds like New York City, with audiences described by WQXR radio host Terrance McKnight as “among the most diverse” in classical music. Our leadership has been in regular demand in panels and workshops on anti-racist practices in classical music; TDU members have also led workshops with educators, young musicians, and arts administrators, sparking industry-wide conversations on diversity, equity, inclusion, and authentic community and civic engagement. Our work and mission have been profiled in publications such as the New York Times and the New Yorker.
