    For 130 years and counting, Henry Street Settlement has delivered the most effective and compassionate services possible to residents of the Lower East Side and beyond. As a multifaceted not-for-profit agency, Henry Street Settlement provides innovative social services, arts programs and healthcare services from 18 locations throughout the Lower East Side. Building upon its legacy of innovation, effective programming, and progressive reform - Henry Street Settlement has grown to offer more than 50 different programs, currently making it one of the most comprehensive settlement houses in New York City, as well as one of the City’s largest social service agencies.

    About the Chief People Officer Role

    As the leader of our People Team, you’ll oversee the development and implementation of Henry Street’s next wave of people strategy initiatives, building on the work that has been done to develop and execute Henry Street’s 2023-2025 strategy, input from our recent culture survey, and our core organization values.

    As a member of our leadership team, you will carry out our vision to practice “HR Without Borders”, strengthening capacity in the field to attract, hire, nurture, elevate and reward a team of over 600 individuals who represent the best in the sector.

    Your accountabilities will include:

    People Strategy, Acquisition, and Development

    • People Strategy: Articulate a multi-year agenda for people policies and programs; Define, communicate, and nurture our culture; Collect feedback from team members on their alignment and engagement, and make working at Henry Street more meaningful and rewarding
    • Talent Acquisition: Raise our reputation as a great place to work; Execute a sourcing, selecting and onboarding strategy that generates a high quality, diverse workforce; Get great people in key roles
    • People Development: Coach senior leaders on managing and developing their teams; Design and lead leadership development activities, including training, succession management, and building senior teams

    Operations and Administration

    • Operations: Oversee the implementation of all people policies and programs with supporting goals, objectives, and budget; Supervise all staff, consultants, attorneys, and training specialists
    • Administration: Ensure compliance with federal and state requirements and with Henry Street policies (conducting investigations, maintaining records, representing Henry Street at hearings)
    • Systems: Modernize and consolidate our systems and bring on new procedures and systems as needed to make us more effective and efficient

    Compensation, Benefits, and Employee Relations

    • Compensation: Manage salaries, including increases, promotions, and other compensation decisions; Develop compensation plan and benchmark pay with comparable organizations; Align performance management systems with compensation philosophy
    • Benefits: Coordinate insurance brokers, insurance carriers, and pension administrator; Oversee group healthcare, retirement, and insurance negotiations
    • Employee Relations: Cultivate a safe, fulfilling, and respectful work environment free from discrimination and harassment that promotes the well-being of our staff; Develop and institute diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives to support mission and values; Investigate and resolve grievances and complaints; Make recommendations for hiring and firing; Manage legal counsel regarding employee relations

    As Chief People Officer, every single day your knowledge of HR conventions, law, people management and organizational development melds with your innovative spirit. You have a track record of success in leading change, possess excellent judgment, are a good listener, and inspire others. To this job you’re bringing a customer service mentality, and you readily gain the trust of both our leaders and team members. You handle sensitive issues with diplomacy and discretion in addition to being a skilled trainer and coach of individuals and groups. Along the way you’ve picked up a bachelor’s degree, logged 10+ years of experience in people management and have 5+ years in a leadership role. We have a preference for HRCI or SHRM Certification and an advanced degree.
