    About the Role

    We are seeking a Junior Accountant to join our team and provide high-quality financial support to the organization. TheJunior Accountant is responsible for ensuring the proper application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for day-to-day maintenance of complete and accurate general ledger accounts, managing accounts payable, preparing monthly/quarterly reconciliations, and supporting non-Finance staff through new employee training, staff education, and on-going staff support. The Junior Accountant also works closely with the GIFFORDS Development team to record contributions in Everyaction (our donor management system), as well as other departments to provide other general accounting assistance.

    This is a full-time, hybrid position in Washington, DC. This position will be expected to work a hybrid schedule, with some time in the office and some time remotely during the week. GIFFORDS staff are expected to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus, with limited exceptions as required by federal and state law.

    Duties + responsibilities

    • Manages accounts payable in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures: works with outside vendors and consultants to obtain W9 and contract information, prepares and manages bills daily, and records necessary accounts payable transactions in QuickBooks.
    • Processes the organization’s credit card and reimbursement transactions in Divvy and assists employees with the approval and processing of payments. Provides technical assistance to all GIFFORDS entities.
    • Designs training sessions and trains new and existing employees on Finance-related systems, such as Divvy, ADP/timecards, and reimbursement requests.
    • Prepare assigned monthly/quarterly reconciliations; research and resolve discrepancies.
    • Works closely with the Development team and outside accountants to record contributions received and produce monthly reports.
    • Works closely with the Operations team to improve document management systems and to develop and revise current procedure memos.
    • Supports annual audit and other ad hoc requests; coordinates with outside accountants to prepare tax filings, allocate costs, and other finance activities.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Essential knowledge, skills + experience

    • At least two years of accounting experience
    • Demonstrated experience with accounting software and spreadsheet programs (Microsoft Office and Google Suite)
    • Ability to learn and adapt to cloud based and other accounting software and applications
    • Experience with and interest in cultivating strong relationships and working closely with people to develop an understanding of the requirements of the users of the financial information
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including strong presentation and active listening skills
    • Experience working in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines with shifting priorities
    • Superior organizational skills and exemplary attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently and within a team setting
    • Strong interest in and commitment to gun violence prevention
    • A commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism

    Valued non-essential knowledge, skills + experience

    • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
    • Experience working in a non-profit setting
    • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets experience
    • Experience with Quickbooks Online, ADP Workforce Now, Divvy, and/or Bill.com

    Salary + benefits

    The salary range for this position is $69,000-76,000, with the exact salary depending on experience.
