    Descrição

The role of Translation Volunteer is to support us with translating documents and other content for use within the NGO. The priority is for translations between English and Spanish as these are the languages we currently work in. However, we are also looking for volunteers who are able to translate our web content into other languages such as French and German. This will enable us to promote our volunteering opportunities to a wider audience. In this role, you will be supervised by the Marketing and Communications Manager via emails, WhatsApp, Skype and Zoom as required.

Translation Volunteers do have the option of working remotely (for French and German only), but we encourage you to undertake the role in person in Huanchaco to receive in-person guidance from staff on your tasks. If you undertake the placement in person and would like to get more involved in OCN, it can also be done in conjunction with another part-time role, giving you a chance to experience fieldwork or work in areas like marketing or fundraising.

For students, all volunteer positions are available as internships, which is ideal for students looking to complete a year in industry/placement abroad. In this case, you will receive an extra level of mentorship and all appropriate communication with your academic institution to ensure compliance with internship placement requirements.

    Responsibilities:

    • Translation of promotional and marketing materials.
    • Translation of frequently used office documents to create a set of templates.
    • Translation of information for publication on our website.
    • If necessary, translation of Annual Report and Monitoring and Evaluation output.

    Requirements:

    • Age 18+
    • Current background check from your home country.
    • Fluency in English and the target language or languages (Spanish, French, German).
    • Relevant academic and/or professional background.
    • Excellent communication skills to enable you to excel in a remote role.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • An eye for detail and excellent proofreading skills.

*If you are not a native Spanish speaker and want to improve your Spanish, we can arrange classes for you in advance (by Skype) or during your stay.

    Time commitment:

Generally, 20-25 hours per week but this is to be discussed during the application process.

In-country placements last a minimum of 4 weeks. If the role is undertaken in combination with another part-time role, your hours will be adjusted accordingly.

What you can expect from us:

    • A thorough introduction to the organization
    • Certificate of completion detailing your role, the project(s) you participated in and the dates you volunteered in.

    If working in person:

    • Personal pick-up upon arriving and walking tour through Huanchaco
    • Certified training in First Aid and Child Safeguarding.
    • 2 days holiday per month
    • 24/7 emergency support
    • Organized activities (barbeques, game nights, volunteer lunch etc.)

A typical day in the role:

Whilst there is a lot of variety in this role, on a typical day you will meet with the Marketing Manager to talk about promotional material that has to be translated for this week. Those could be for example a website text or a Social Media post.

If you choose to volunteer in-country and combine this role with another part-time role, translation work can be scheduled around other projects that take place in the mornings or afternoons. For example, one day you might spend the morning translating recruitment materials, then after lunch you might assist in teaching a class at the REC. However, if you dedicate your time solely to translation (due to a high workload or personal preference), you can control your own working hours, as long as deadlines are met.

After work, there is plenty of time to catch one of Huanchaco’s world-famous sunsets from the tranquillity of the beach, or indeed from a surfboard. Then there are various options to fill your evening, socializing with local and other volunteers, sampling the famous Peruvian cuisine, attending talks and cultural events, music, dance, theatre, movies- the list is endless.

If you undertake this role remotely, then you will work from home in your available free time, so the structure of your working hours is more flexible. It can be undertaken in an evening or weekend timeframe, to suit you.
