    Descrição

    Health Educator

Hygiene and Sanitation is essential for the survival and development of the women and children. Something as simple as hand washing can save lives of many women, children and families.

The volunteer program promotes hand washing and behavior change among the women, children and their families. The volunteers will be required teach women and children in schools and at family level basic hygiene practices such as washing hands after toilet use, hand wash before eating food.

The volunteer program will help the women, schools and families learn to build “Tippy Taps” near their toilets so that hand washing after toilet use is easy. With Tippy Taps build near the toilets, families’ health improves and saves lives of the women, children and household members.

You will be working in rural setting and a community located near the lake where sanitation and hygiene is very poor. People living near the lake have poor hygiene and sanitation behavior and need information, they use water directly from the lake for drinking and often do open defecation within the lake.

    You Role as a Volunteer

The volunteer working on this volunteer program will be required to carry some demonstration materials they will be using for sharing hygiene and sanitation information. Materials such as charts illustrating the process to better hygiene, gloves, water purifiers such as water guard and organize information prior setting off to the volunteer trip. You are also encouraged to carry along any materials that you think can support you as you carry out your role of Hygiene and Sanitation Educator.

While in Uganda, you will be working with village health workers, local leaders, teachers in school and the staff to make the program more effective.

    Tasks for volunteers:

Information sharing on hygiene and sanitation: This will involves meeting with group of children in schools, meet women groups, visiting families to communicate, share and sensitize communities about hygiene and sanitation practices. Information on waste management, boiling water for drinking, hand wash after toilet use and before eating food. Effects that arise out of poor hygiene and sanitation are also shared.

Build Tippy Taps: this focuses on ensuring that each family has a Tippy tap in their homes. Therefore, the volunteer will be responsible for helping families and schools learn how to build Tippy taps near their toilets and make sure that each family sets up a small garden under the Tippy tap that they will use to grow vegetables.

Teach hand washing through demonstrations: Many people especially children do not know how to wash their hands properly. This task will involve teaching and demonstrating how hands are washed properly to avoid the spread of germs through unwashed hands.

Award of WASH Certificates: At the completion of the Sanitation and Hygiene talks and training, you will be expected to award certificates to women and families that have put into action what you have taught them especially building Tippy Taps near their toilets. This is always an exciting time for many families as they get to celebrate their achievements.
