Horse SenseAbility, located in Sherborn MA, is a nonprofit dedicated to helping children and young adults who are underserved, at risk or have special needs develop life skills by learning about, caring for and being with horses in a peaceful, rural setting. We particularly focus on working with young people who are or have been in the foster care system; have experienced trauma from emotional, physical or sexual abuse; struggle with mental illness; have autism spectrum disorder; are living in low-income, often stressful, situations; or have physical or cognitive disabilities.

Horse SenseAbility offers 7 core services:

    • Therapeutic Riding & Horsemanship
    • Occupational Therapy on Horseback (aka hippotherapy)
    • City to Saddle (free summer camp for children from low-income families)
    • Horse Tales (reading & riding summer camp for elementary school children)
    • Wildstar Wranglers (job skill development for young adults with autism)
    • Hugo's Pony Club for Preschoolers
    • Community visits by our Executive Director and therapy pony

We are looking for up to 2 people to join our Board of Directors who have substantive experience managing a nonprofit and/or fundraising. Experience with children's programs and/or horses a plus.

We currently have 7 Board Members, several of whom have been on the Board since the organization's founding in 2017.

    Expectations:

    • Meet virtually once a month for up to 90 minutes
    • Participate in small committees as needed
    • Introduce your personal and professional network to the organization
    • Advise and strategize with the Executive Director on programming, sustainability, fundraising, development, marketing and communication, finance and succession planning

Note that while Board Members are expected to participate in fundraising efforts, we do not have a "give or get" policy because we want to attract Board Members from diverse economic circumstances.

Candidates will be asked to fill out an application and submit a resume. Those of interest to the organization will meet virtually for an interview with several members of the Board.
