Youth Media Project Coordinator

While youth in Liberia represent 70% of the population they are the most underserved and disrespected population. Despite their numerical majority, Liberian youth face the highest rates of unemployment, the lowest access to education and the lowest access to health care. They also lack a voice in government, lack inclusion in decision-making processes, and lack presence at public debates. They have no access to the policymaking structures or processes that shape their daily

lives. Whether it be in their local communities and townships or at the national level, the voices of youth are being stifled and cut off from reaching the ears of the very people elected to serve them.

Our Youth Media Project is strongly connected to our initiative to provide youth a physical and virtual space to discuss the issues that are most pertinent to them, to create solutions to those issues, and to network with government and NGOs to implement those solutions while holding

political stakeholders and major actors in the reconstruction and development of Liberia accountable for their actions and promises.

Youth Media Project provides media training and hard experience for young men and women ages 15-35 to develop their skills and encourage them to produce truthful, high quality information that will positively transform the image of youth and make their voices heard to positively impact Liberian society and growth.

Typical Functions:

• Design and implement active experimentation activities in the field centered on exposing youth and community issues with the goal to generate active solutions to those issues.
• Network with other NGOs to use field work as an opportunity to survey youth for program

design purposes or connecting youth with NGOs for projects or interventions.

• Oversee and guide participants in unbiased information gathering in the field and the

editing and production of their content through webcasts, radio and video mediums.

• Aid in developing/identifying distribution methods for youth produced media (we already have a partnership with a radio/tv station but more methods of distribution are needed).
• Develop and engage in a programmatic strategy that positively depicts or encourages

youth activism in communities generating solutions to the issues that youth can take charge of

• Understand and research community representatives and platforms for development in Liberia

and work with youth to ensure accountability in local governance

• Ensure that the mission of the program is being upheld
• Encourage entrepreneurship in participants and target work for the participants to help

create a sustainable future for the program and provide jobs for participants

• Recruit other local or international volunteers to help expand and run the project
• Develop local and international partnerships to sustain and grow the program, acquire materials/funding, and other support.

Requirements:

• Proven ability and experience in the development of media
• A present student or have bachelors or other significant training in Mass Communication, Media or journalism is an advantage
• A desire to improve the lives of Liberians and for improving democracy
• Educational background in film and production management and marketing studies
• The intern will make lots of documentaries and films in local communities
• The intern needs to travel, interviewing and shoot runs on different townships
• Interest in filming and camerawork is a necessity
• Be able to multi-task and creative in making films and doing interviews
• Very progressive and not commercially minded
• Intern should like to work for local community media and television
• Sudent should have a talent and a vision about human rights and social justice
• Self-motivated and pro-active work attitude
• Robust to go to the communities
• Strong personality and being an “activists” type of person
• Bringing own laptops, film camera and programs/software like final cut pro
• Good English in writing and verbal communication

Preferences (not required):

• Experience in promoting democracy, youth activism and citizenship
