About Us:

DEFEND is a volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated to reducing risks for children and vulnerable people online. We are currently building 65square, the world’s healthiest social media and dating platform, designed with game-like features and characteristics of an MMO. Our goal is to create a safer, more positive online space for users.

Role Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Machine Learning Team Lead with expertise in Python development to guide our machine learning initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science, machine learning algorithms, and software development practices. This role involves leading a team of developers, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and driving the implementation of innovative solutions that align with our organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Leadership:

• Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Python developers specializing in machine learning.
• Foster a collaborative environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement.
• Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback to team members.

Project Management:

• Oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of machine learning projects from conception through deployment.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to define project requirements, objectives, and success metrics.
• Ensure projects are completed on time and within budget while meeting quality standards.

Technical Development:

• Design and implement scalable machine learning models using Python libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.
• Develop data pipelines for preprocessing large datasets to ensure high-quality input for machine learning algorithms.
• Optimize existing models for performance improvements and scalability.

Research & Innovation:

• Stay current with industry trends in machine learning and artificial intelligence to inform project direction.
• Explore new technologies and methodologies that can enhance our capabilities in data analysis and model development.
• Publish findings or case studies related to successful implementations within the organization.

Collaboration & Communication:

• Work closely with other departments (e.g., IT, program management) to integrate machine learning solutions into existing systems.
• Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
• Represent the organization at conferences or workshops related to machine learning applications in non-profits.

Qualifications

• MUST be 18 years and above.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
• Proven experience in software development with a focus on Python programming.
• Strong understanding of machine learning algorithms and frameworks; experience with deep learning is a plus.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams or projects.
• Excellent problem-solving skills along with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud) is desirable but not mandatory.
