Horse handlers play a pivotal role in the effectiveness and safety of the therapy sessions
at Stable Friendships Foundation. Essential duties of a horse handler include the
pre-session preparation of the horse, which encompasses catching, grooming, warming
up, and tacking up the horse in anticipation of the client's arrival. At times, horse
handlers may also guide clients in grooming and tacking up, providing an educational
and engaging experience.
During the session, horse handlers are responsible for leading the horse, ensuring the
safety of both clients and volunteers by always maintaining gentle control over the
horse. A key aspect of being a successful horse handler is possessing a calm demeanor;
this is vital in preventing any stress on our horses before and during sessions. It is
essential for horse handlers to follow instructions from the therapist diligently, yet
ensuring the horse's behavior remains composed and manageable.
Safety and the well-being of our horses and clients are our utmost priorities. While
having prior experience with horses is preferred for this position, Stable Friendships
Foundation offers specialized training for those eager to learn and step into this role,
with a strong emphasis on developing the gentle and calm handling skills crucial for
maintaining a stress-free environment for our horses.
