Our Vision
New Voices envisions safe, equitable, and joyous communities for all through the liberation of the most marginalized among us.
Our Values
As an unapologetically Black and queer organization, New Voices values authenticity, collaboration, community care, and radical disruption.
Our Story
The spark for New Voices was ignited in 2004 when four Black women, La'Tasha D. Mayes, Bekezela Mguni, Maria Nicole Dautruche, and Lois "Toni" McClendon, gathered women of color and allies from Western Pennsylvania to attend the Women’s March in Washington. From that event, New Voices for Reproductive Justice has grown from a grassroots effort to a nationally recognized nonprofit organization, with offices spanning three cities and two states. In 2023, New Voices’ Co-Founder, La’Tasha D. Mayes, accepted the call to serve as a Pennsylvania House Representative, illustrating the power and influence of Black women visionaries and the Reproductive Justice framework.
Our Team
Our staff currently work in three cities, Cleveland, Ohio and Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We are leaders in our communities armed with a deep understanding of the Reproductive Justice framework. Our city-based community organizers, voter engagement coordinators, seasonal canvassers, and policy analysts provide resources and education, register people to vote, and create community-centered spaces to help cultivate the next generation of Reproductive Justice leaders and social changemakers.
How We Make An Impact
New Voices builds power and enacts change through a two-pronged approach: Mobilization and Narrative Strategy. Our Mobilization team (Community Organizing & Engagement and Integrated Voter Engagement) is embedded within our communities, connecting, resourcing, and deepening folks’ understanding and application of Reproductive Justice. Our Narrative Strategy team (Policy & Advocacy and Narrative Power) helps connect the dots between our personal lives, shared societal experiences, and the people, paradigms, and power structures suppressing the well-being of Black women, Black queer folks, and Black marginalized communities.
