    About ChemFORWARD

ChemFORWARD is a non-profit organization (fiscally sponsored by Habitable). We are dedicated to advancing safer chemistry through transparent, accessible scientific information. Our work helps companies and organizations identify safer alternatives to hazardous chemicals and supports the transition to more sustainable chemistry practices.

    Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated Chemical Data Research Intern to join our team for a 3-month engagement. In this role, you'll gain valuable experience researching chemical identification data and processing datasets that directly contribute to our mission of promoting safer chemistry. This position is perfect for students or recent graduates interested in the intersection of chemistry, data science, and sustainability.

    What You'll Do

    Chemical Identification Research:

    1. Research and verify CAS numbers and chemical identification data using specialized databases (ChemFORWARD, wINCIpedia, CompTox, CoSing)
    2. Cross-reference chemical information across multiple databases for accuracy
    3. Document findings in structured formats that enhance our information systems

    Data Processing:

    1. Manipulate and process large chemical datasets in Excel or programmatically
    2. Implement data cleaning, organization, and quality control procedures
    3. Support data migration between platforms to improve our information infrastructure

    Technical Contributions:

    1. Assist with basic technical tasks using Python (guidance provided)
    2. Follow technical documentation to set up and run Python projects
    3. Learn and utilize our task management platform (Asana)

    Collaborative Work:

    1. Participate in regular check-ins with your project lead
    2. Document progress and challenges
    3. Collaborate effectively with team members

    Qualifications:

We are looking for candidates who are currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in chemistry/biochemistry, data science, or related field, have experience with Excel and basic data manipulation, demonstrate strong attention to detail and organizational skills, and are self-motivated with the ability to work independently.

Skills Spectrum: We welcome candidates from various backgrounds who may have strengths in different areas. You'll be a good fit if you have some combination of:

    • Chemistry Knowledge:
      • Understanding of chemical nomenclature and identification
      • Familiarity with chemical databases and information sources
    • Data Handling:
      • Experience working with and organizing datasets
      • Comfort with data cleaning and transformation
    • Technical Skills:
      • Basic understanding of Python (preferred but not required)
      • Ability to follow technical documentation

The ideal candidate will have some elements from each category, but we recognize most candidates will be stronger in some areas than others.

    What We Offer

    • Hands-on experience with chemical data management and research
    • Flexible remote work arrangement
    • $15 per hour compensation
    • Regular mentorship through check-ins every 20 hours with the project lead
    • Potential to extend the internship based on mutual agreement
    • Opportunity to contribute to advancing safer chemistry practices

    Details:

    • Duration: 3 months
    • Hours: Approximately 20 hours per week
    • Compensation: $15 per hour
    • Location: Remote
