Duration: Up to 40 hours per week for a 3-week duration (June through mid-August) Compensation: College credit, stipend to cover expenses

Help Transform School-Supported Agriculture Across California!

Are you passionate about food equity, sustainability, and reimagining school meals? Conscious Kitchen is leading a statewide effort to revolutionize California’s school food system—replacing processed, conventional meals with fresh, local, organic offerings. We’re building a scalable, community-driven model to make 100% organic school meals the norm—and we need local students like you to help bring this vision to life.

This summer, we’re launching the Conscious Kitchen Farm-to-School California Road Tour—and we’re looking for 18 dynamic Outreach & Engagement Interns to support this exciting initiative in their California home regions.

In this role, you’ll partner with CK staff and student leaders to amplify the stories of local farmers, school food service innovators, and community champions working to nourish students and steward the land. You’ll serve as a regional guide, helping coordinate visits, connect with local stakeholders, and bring visibility to the farm-to-school movement through storytelling, media, and collaboration.

Whether through photos, interviews, outreach, or local insight, your work will help shape long-term partnerships with small organic farmers and school district food service leaders to advance a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable school food system across California.

If you care deeply about community, sustainability, and storytelling—and want to help bridge the gap between small organic farms and school districts—this is your invitation to be part of something big.

    Why Join Us?

This isn’t just a research or outreach role—it’s a hands-on opportunity to drive meaningful change in California’s food system. You’ll play a key part in a statewide movement that empowers schools to serve healthy, organic meals to every student—and inspires other states to follow.

    Key Responsibilities

    Regional Insight & Collaboration

    • Collaborate with CK staff and fellow student leaders to plan regional routes, identify key farms, and schedule visits.
    • Attend and support in-person farm visits, community events, and meetings with food system stakeholders.
    • Coordinate logistics and communication with local contacts, including farmers, chefs, nonprofits, and school district representatives.

    Farmer Outreach & Relationship Building

    • Support interviews with farmers to capture their stories, values, challenges, and contributions to sustainable agriculture.
    • Help document visits through photos, videos, and notes that bring each farm’s story to life.

    Storytelling & Media

    • Provide local insight and storytelling support for farmer profiles, digital content, and community reports.
    • Ensure that stories reflect the history, voice, and values of the communities they represent.

    Team Communication & Reflection

    • Participate in daily team debriefs and check-ins to share insights and adjust plans as needed.
    • Offer recommendations based on your local knowledge to improve outreach and community engagement.

Qualifications for Planning, Outreach, Media & Engagement Assistant

We’re looking for passionate, curious, and community-minded individuals in graduate school or 3rd/4th year undergrads who are excited to make an impact. Ideal candidates will have:

    • A strong interest in sustainable food systems, education, agriculture, communications or community health
    • Experience or coursework in communications, environmental studies, food systems, public health, journalism, or related fields
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Comfortable with outreach, scheduling, and engaging with a wide range of stakeholders
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a remote team
    • Familiarity with your local region’s food or farming landscape is a plus
    • Photography, video, or storytelling experience is a bonus
    • Valid driver's license and vehicle is required, students will receive mileage reimbursed
    • A flexible, proactive attitude and willingness to jump in where needed

We are looking for motivated individuals to start immediately.
