    DESIGN INTERN

Please kindly read the entire job posting. Application instructions are located at the end.

Data-Pop Alliance is looking for a Design Intern. We are an international nonprofit created in 2013 out of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI), the MIT Media Lab and ODI. We bring together researchers, experts, practitioners, and activists to change the world with data through three pillars of work: diagnosing local realities and human problems with data and AI; mobilizing capacities, communities, and ideas towards more data-literate societies; and transforming the systems and processes that underpin our societies and countries.

DPA has partnered with and received funding from organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, UNDP, FAO, UN ESCWA, GIZ (German development agency), the Vodafone Institute, Oxfam México and other key international stakeholders to develop projects in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), the Middle-East and North Africa (MENA), and Asia. To learn more about DPA, please consult our website and our “Overview and Outlook 2022-2024” report.

DPA’s projects are managed and carried out by a core team of about 30 people, including Directors, Managers, Officers, Data Scientists, Research Assistants, and Interns.

    Dates: 3 months, full-time

    Location: Remote

DPA is seeking a design intern eager to gain experience and apply new and developing skills on projects related to data, AI, international development, gender, and social inequities, all while being supported by a team of passionate professionals.

The Design Intern will be reporting to the Communications Director and Design Lead, and be supported by the Communications Manager and Officer, and will provide support through the following key responsibilities:

    Scope of Work

    1. Graphic and Editorial Design Support (40%)
      • Assist in the design and layout of editorial documents, such as research papers, reports, and presentations.
      • Support in the creation of original images, illustrations, and infographics for specific projects, including publication covers, social media cards, and event materials (agendas, invitations, posters, brochures).
      • Help implement DPA branding across different projects, including creating visual materials for merchandising and newsletters.
      • Assist in developing visual identity proposals for specific projects under the guidance of senior design staff.
    2. Web Design - UX, UI Support (25%)
    • Assist in designing web page templates for various DPA projects.
    • Support in uploading and publishing web content (e.g., blog posts, job openings, new publications) as directed by team members.
    • Contribute to creating mock-ups for project platforms and support the design of the User Interface (UI) for web-based projects, working under the direction of the Graphic and Web Design Manager.
    1. Multimedia (25%)
    • Edit videos for DPA or specific projects, including support for co-developing storyboards, editing video and audio and, if applicable, producing animated content with support from Design Lead.
    • Create interactive content using various tools, such as Genially and Canva.
    1. General Support (10%)
    • Participate in team check-ins, design reviews, and project meetings to align with the team's objectives.

    Profile/Qualifications

    • Recent graduate (or student in last semester of university) with a degree in design, communications, or relevant experience in the field.
    • Intermediate use of Adobe Suite and related programs, such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Canva and Capcut.
    • Experience with design for social media (e.g., diverse image formats).
    • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Chrome Interfaz).
    • Experience using WordPress or similar platforms is highly desirable.
    • Strong interest in human rights, gender, social inequality, and more.

    • Video editing skills are considered a plus.
    • Data visualization skills and tools management is considered a plus.
    • Comfortable with remote teams, processes and software (e.g., Slack, Asana)
    • Ability to work with people from different cultural backgrounds.
    • Ability to multitask, while being proactive, detail-oriented, analytical and organized (i.e., ability to organize files by project).
