    Position Summary

    We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Associate Director of State Program Operations to join our growing organization. Reporting to AFC’s Chief Program Officer, this position will be responsible for orchestrating and streamlining AFC's state-level work across multiple teams. This position will act as the operational backbone for executing our state-level initiatives, ensuring seamless internal coordination, effective communication, and strategic alignment across all involved teams and team members. This role is new to AFC, and was created to strategically address our internal systems and operations across our state-level work specifically.

This position will also work closely with our State Government Relations Director, State Directors in Florida and North and South Carolina, and additional key team members focused on state-level policy and programs. The position will be located in our headquarters in Washington, DC. We are open to hiring at the Senior Associate level for this role as well, for candidates with less experience.

    Responsibilities

    Cross-Team Operations & Collaboration

    • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance cross-team collaboration and program delivery.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
    • Design and implement meeting frameworks that drive clear outcomes.
    • Facilitate strategic discussions and decision-making, acting as a strategic thought-partner to team members, and contributing to AFC’s culture of continuous learning and improvement.
    • Ensure effective knowledge-sharing and follow-through on action items.

    Fast-Moving Project Leadership

    • Lead project teams that address fast-moving opportunities across different states.
    • Design and implement project management frameworks that drive clear outcomes.
    • Develop project scopes, timelines, and metrics, and facilitate cross-functional collaboration.
    • Independently diagnose problems or risks and identify solutions and opportunities.
    • Manage special projects for the Chief Program Officer and other members of AFC’s leadership team, including preparing materials for external audiences and engagements by delegating, drafting, and reviewing communications, presentations, background briefs, and talking points.

    Program Evaluation, Reporting, and Strategic Synthesis

    • Partner closely with the Chief Program Officer and other members of AFC’s leadership team to develop and communicate strategic program goals and track key results for success.
    • Design and implement a comprehensive reporting framework for state-level initiatives.
    • Create standardized evaluation templates and processes for different internal stakeholder groups.
    • Create and maintain dashboards to track key performance indicators across state programs.
    • Synthesize complex information into clear, actionable updates for executive-level audiences.

    Qualifications

    • 7+ years of experience in roles related to program management in mission-driven organizations, including experience leading project teams and/or people management.
    • Proven track record of managing complex projects, coordinating across multiple teams, and balancing the needs of different internal stakeholders with competing priorities.
    • Experience developing and implementing strategies in quickly changing environments, while taking into account external political and relationship dynamics.
    • Outstanding organizational and project management skills.
    • Ability to assess big opportunities and bold ideas against organizational priorities and comfort facilitating discussions and decisions with senior leaders.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including production of strategic written reports for executive-level audiences, and designing and creating slide presentations.
    • Familiarity or interest in learning about adaptation and resilience.
    • Experience working with state-level agency leaders or elected officials is a plus, including experience navigating state agency or legislative settings.
    • Bachelor’s degree required.
