This position works closely with Earthworks’ program staff who work to reduce risks to water, health, air and climate from oil and gas production, along with our communication, digital and development departments. The ideal candidate will thrive at managing multiple priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced campaigning environment, advocating for policy changes that reduce the impact of oil and gas activities, and maintaining solid relationships with diverse partners.

The New Mexico Lead Campaigner will report to Earthworks’ Deputy Energy Team Director and will join our energy program which includes federal/state policy experts, communications staff, development staff, campaigners, and a team of thermographers active in Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California.

    Scope of duties:

    • Lead our campaign efforts in New Mexico opposing oil and gas extraction and reducing harm from oil and gas through policy advocacy, community engagement, and technical expertise
    • Support community allies and grassroots campaigns with organizing, outreach activities, and base-building in alignment with the principles of environmental justice
    • Provide technical assistance to partner organizations and participate in the strategic development of campaign tactics targeting decision makers and corporations
    • Build and maintain working relationships with other external allies including local, state and national organizations, technical experts, and media
    • Engage in the legislative and regulatory process to advocate for adequate safeguards for community health and environmental protections
    • Conduct 1-3 field trips per quarter, utilizing an Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) camera and leveraging satellite data to support and inform our ongoing campaigns, engage with affected community members, and inform data driven research efforts
    • Act as an Earthworks’ media spokesperson for campaigns and represent Earthworks at external events, meetings, and public hearings. Provide written materials and/or verbal communications with individual and institutional donors as needed, with the support of Earthworks’ Development team.
    • Collaborate with the State and Federal Policy team, the Communications team, and partner organizations to develop and execute strategies that reduce oil and gas pollution and impacts on communities and the environment
