    Descrição

    The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., is seeking an international co-director and a faculty member for the Global Business Journalism Program at Beijing’s Tsinghua University – China’s most prestigious university. The international co-director will run the program alongside the Chinese co-director, beginning in February 2026. The faculty member will teach courses on general and business reporting to graduate students during the September 2025 to January 2026 semester. Applicants may apply for either or both positions.

    More than 500 students, about half Chinese and half from around the world, have received master’s degrees in the English-language GBJ program, a partnership among Tsinghua University, ICFJ, and Bloomberg News. The overall goal of the program is to create a group of top-notch business reporters and editors who understand China and can produce clear, balanced and insightful coverage of the global economy.

    ICFJ and Tsinghua will provide an honorarium, international and domestic travel, housing on or near campus, health insurance, and an expense account to cover visas, telecommunications, etc. The deadline for applications is May 1, 2025.

    International Co-Director Responsibilities

    • Teach program courses in accordance with the GBJ curriculum and academic program and provide academic advising for students.
    • Manage and oversee implementation of all program components and goals with the Chinese co-director, in coordination with ICFJ and Tsinghua University. Specific responsibilities:
      • Represent ICFJ in relations with the leadership of the School of Journalism, furthering the interests of the students and implementing top-notch academic standards.
      • Actively participate in discussions with the school’s leadership on curriculum changes and/or revisions and on integration of Chinese and international students in all classes.
      • Oversee the implementation of a monitoring, evaluation and learning system (referred to as MEL) to guide the program’s development and measure its achievements.
      • Coordinate evaluations of all substantive activities and record students’ participation in them. Track and report details about programmatic activities.
      • Coordinate sponsor visits to campus and identify ways to increase their exposure to the program, while also increasing their brand visibility.
      • Identify ways to solicit sponsors’ continuing support and deepened engagement with GBJ.
      • Manage recruitment and selection of students.
      • Coordinate an internship program for students as well as other enrichment opportunities that extend their learning beyond the classroom.
      • Assist students in finding jobs before and after graduation.
      • Manage GBJ staff to achieve the program’s goals and objectives.
      • Manage GBJ’s student social media team to produce content for the GBJ international website and GBJ social media platforms.
    • Facilitate interaction and communication between local and international faculty, and between those parties and ICFJ. Specific responsibilities:
      • Provide ICFJ with regular updates regarding activities at GBJ.
      • Write an annual report, with contributions from Tsinghua’s Co-Director and other international faculty.
      • Conduct an orientation session each semester, in conjunction with Tsinghua’s Co-Director, to orient international faculty to University procedures, deadlines, rules, and opportunities for cross-cultural exchange and participation in campus life.
    • Develop and implement professional workshops for working journalists and public events.
    • Oversee, maintain and regularly update the GBJ international website, globalbusinessjournalism.com.
    • Manage all social media efforts of the GBJ program and oversee regular updates to all GBJ social media platforms.
    • Identify faculty needs. Evaluate, recruit, coordinate and supervise local and other trainers in the implementation of the program. Specific responsibilities:
    • Whenever useful and possible, increasing the program’s use of sponsor resources in training, including their personnel, intellectual property, and expert knowledge;
    • Provide evaluations of international faculty to ICFJ at the end of each semester, or sooner if warranted.
    • Identify and cultivate new potential funders for this program in close cooperation with ICFJ.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of five years of experience covering business or economics for a globally recognized media outlet.
    • Experience teaching at the university level and/or training professional journalists.
    • Master’s degree or higher required.
    • Experience managing projects and personnel.
    • Experience working internationally, ideally in China or elsewhere in Asia.
    • Multimedia, social media and data journalism skills strongly preferred.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Fluency in English.
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with Chinese and international administrators and faculty; ability to motivate the best work from students.

    Faculty Responsibilities:

    • Teaching two courses in business journalism.
    • Prepare all lesson plans, multimedia presentations, handouts, tests and quizzes and any other material needed for the course. The faculty member will have access to lesson plans and teaching materials used by previous faculty members.
    • Contributing to other courses and workshops as needed.
    • Conducting occasional short seminars on business journalism topics for students or professional journalists.
    • Mentoring and advising students, including on their final projects and theses.
    • Assisting with social media and internet content for Global Business Journalism platforms.
    • Communicating regularly with the co-directors, and providing monthly e-mail updates to ICFJ staff.

    Qualifications:

    • Minimum of five years of experience covering business or economics for a globally recognized media outlet.
