    The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) conserves and restores the lands and waters of the Virginia Piedmont, while building stronger, more sustainable communities. Founded in 1972, PEC is a locally based, community-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit and accredited land trust. At the core of PEC’s approach is a focus on educating, engaging and empowering people to effect positive change in their communities.

    Your Role

    PEC is seeking an experienced foundation relations professional to grow our portfolio of grants.

    As the Grants Manager, you will be responsible for managing and expanding our base of grants from local, regional and national foundations, as well as actively supporting our government grants. As the point person for coordinating and advancing relationships with our foundation partners, you will be an integral member of a 7-person advancement team working to fund an annual budget of roughly $7 million, including more than $1 million in foundation grants.

    We are seeking a person who has worked with foundations for several years and understands how foundations work. PEC’s current grants portfolio includes a variety of family foundations with living donors, legacy family foundations, private independent foundations, and community foundations. You will have know-how in engaging foundation staff and coordinating relationships with Trustees and other foundation stakeholders. You will work extensively with PEC’s 50-member staff to develop proposals and reports, and prepare timely updates to funders. You will keep a calendar of report and proposal deadlines and coordinate development and submission of these documents with our program and finance staff.

    Areas of Responsibility

    • Identify PEC projects that match grant requirements and track submission deadlines.
    • Identify new funding sources, with major gifts team and programmatic staff, including new national funders through research or relationships.
    • Collaborate with PEC advancement and programmatic staff to develop and submit proposals, letters of inquiry, and reports with required financial information.
    • Assist the finance department in allocating pending and received funds.
    • Use PEC’s database and other information sources to research current and prospective supporters.
    • Provide updates to funders, and set up and prepare staff for meetings with them.
    • Coordinate foundation outreach with PEC Major Gifts Officers and Director of

    Advancement.

    • Submit required reports and payment requests, and ensure receipt of all awarded grant funds.
    • Maintain digital files of all foundation and government funders and prospects.
    • In coordination with Communications, take a leading role in crafting PEC's annual report.
    • Manage and maintain sensitive and confidential information, ensuring it is handled securely and in compliance with the organization's policies and procedures.

    This position will be based out of PEC’s headquarters office in Warrenton, VA, with some ability to telework. You can also expect to travel to locations within PEC’s region a few times a quarter for meetings and site visits. Occasional attendance at night or weekend events may be required.

    Required Qualifications

    • Strong work ethic and commitment to PEC’s core values, mission and vision.

    • Minimum of five years of experience in nonprofit advancement, including working with foundations.
    • Demonstrated success in securing grants, and experience in writing grant proposals and reports.
    • Experience in managing a nonprofit grants calendar and meeting proposal and report deadlines.
    • Excellent and compelling oral and written communication skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative abilities, including the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and work styles.
    • Ability to work effectively under multiple deadlines.
    • Proficiency in computer systems and MS-Office software.
    • Reliable transportation.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Strong time management and ability to communicate progress where and when needed to reduce stress and lead to timely and successful completion of tasks.
    • Ability to work with donor and program data, grant portals, financial documents, and other required items for grant applications.
    • Well-versed in AP style and editorial rules.
    • Experience with CRM database software (PEC uses Salesforce).
    • Experience and/or interest in public policy, with an emphasis on environmental, conservation, and/or land use issues.
