    Organization Overview

    REFORM Alliance is a national organization seeking to safely reduce the number of people on probation and parole and create real pathways to work and wellness for people who have been supervised instead of supported. We are using all the resources we have to help fix the flawed criminal justice system in the United States by changing laws and policies and building a movement of REFORMers to help change hearts and minds.

    REFORM was founded in the wake of the #FreeMeek movement. The Board includes award-winning recording artist Meek Mill; Fanatics executive chairman Michael Rubin; Arnold Ventures co-founder Laura Arnold; entrepreneur and business mogul Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter; Kraft Group CEO and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft; Galaxy Digital CEO and founder Michael E. Novogratz; Vista Equity Partners founder, chairman, CEO Robert F. Smith;Brooklyn Nets co-owner, businesswoman, investor, and philanthropist Clara Wu Tsai; and CEO and President of Live Nation Entertainment Michael Rapino. Criminal justice advocate Jessica Jackson leads the organization as CEO.

    Position Overview

    The Hands-On Controller at REFORM Alliance will play a pivotal role in the organization’s financial leadership, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). This individual will oversee all financial and accounting functions, ensuring robust governance, compliance, and streamlined processes. As a key leader within a dynamic nonprofit focused on advocacy, the Controller will manage a small finance team while fostering a collaborative environment that supports REFORM’s mission to improve the justice system

    Financial Oversight (40%):

    • Manage all aspects of financial reporting, budgeting, general ledger and cash flow management for the organization, comprised of a 501(c)3 & 501(c)4 structure with a combined operating budget of $16-$18 million.
    • Ensure timely and accurate financial statements in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit regulations.
    • Monitor and analyze financial performance, identifying trends and areas for improvement.
    • Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll functions.
    • Prepare and manage annual budgets and financial plans in collaboration with departmental leaders.

    Governance & Compliance (30%):

    • Develop, implement, and enforce internal controls and governance frameworks.
    • Ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements, including tax filings and audits.
    • Conduct regular risk assessments and implement strategies to mitigate financial risks.
    • Maintain documentation and compliance records for financial transactions and processes.
    • Collaborate with external auditors and regulatory agencies during audits and reviews in partnership with the Chief Operating Officer.

    Team Leadership & Development (20%):

    • Supervise and mentor a small team of finance professionals and contractors, fostering professional growth and development.
    • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
    • Promote a collaborative team environment and ensure alignment with organizational goals to further our mission.
    • Identify training needs and facilitate professional development opportunities for the finance team as we evolve our finance functions.

    Process Improvement & Stakeholder Engagement (10%):

    • Identify and implement streamlined financial processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
    • Prepare and present financial reports to the leadership team and key stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with the COO and other leaders to align financial strategies with organizational objectives.
    • Engage with staff and stakeholders to educate them on financial processes and best practices.

    Your Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree, degree in Accounting preferred
    • 6-10 years of accounting experience within the nonprofit space or public accounting within nonprofit organizations
    • Advanced Excel skills
    • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
    • Must be detail oriented
    • Professional and resourceful style with ability to work both independently and as a team, and ability to take initiative and manage multiple tasks and projects at a time
    • Flexible personality to adapt to changing environment
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Proficiency in NetSuite, Slack, Navan, Brex, G-suite, Asana and Salesforce
    • Ability to both be a coach and a player as you navigate the details and the 30,000 foot view of accounting and finance

    We believe in the magic, connection, and collaboration that in-office work brings to our team. Therefore, we gather in our New York City (midtown) office five (5) days a week. The role requires staff to live within commuting distance of New York City.
