    Position Scope and Responsibilities

    The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for planning, developing, and implementing the Foundation’s marketing strategies, communications, partnership outreach, and public relations activities. This position directs the efforts and manages the Marketing Manager and the Communications and Partnership staff, coordinating with all NAF departments to ensure that marketing and communications activities align.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Communications and Marketing

    • Lead development of NAF’s annual Marketing & Communications strategic plan to cover primary initiatives such as programs, exhibits, events, fundraising appeals, retail marketing, and mission impact
    • Responsible for the achievement of the goals and objectives of the Marketing and Communications Annual Plan
    • Ensure that systems are in place to measure metrics, and report progress to the NAF leadership
    • Develop annual budgets with Finance for marketing & communications, monitor progress, ensure adherence, and evaluate performance
    • Manage and steward organizational partnerships including those that support marketing and fundraising goals
    • Manage public relations firm(s) and coordinate communications strategy/messaging with the National Archives communications department
    • Evaluate market research and develop membership marketing strategies to meet changing conditions
    • Collaborate with the Director of Retail to maximize sales, marketing, and consumer growth of the Archives Store online
    • Find relevant ways to engage existing NAF partners in new and upcoming initiatives

    Brand Management

    • Develop, implement, and evaluate an annual marketing and communications plan that includes social media, print and digital content, and email marketing
    • Ensure that the brand identity, messaging, marketing, and communications strategy are in all organizational efforts, that there is adherence to style and social media standards, and that presence is met
    • Manage communications and marketing staff to ensure growth of social media outreach, print materials, and other collateral are accurate and salient to audiences
    • Oversee the development, design, distribution, and maintenance of high-quality print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to annual reports, brochures, newsletters, invitations, direct mail appeals, signage, and other promotional material as needed
    • Develop the strategy and generation of engaging digital content for the NAF website, social media, and email channels that lead to measurable action.
    • Ensure internal photo database is properly maintained
    • Manage website content, ensuring regular updates occur as needed
    • Work with various departments to ensure timely updates to online information
    • Perform biannual website audit to ensure live information is current and up to date, and old content is removed/archived as necessary

    Media

    • Responsible for the organization's press outreach, including messaging in press releases, creation of press kits and materials, interview preparation, and responses to media requests
    • Develop close partnerships with members of the media
    • Collaborate with NAF partners to maximize press opportunities

    Operations

    • Lead project management for NAF’s high-visibility Capital Campaign programming and events
    • Work with the Deputy Executive Director to develop an annual strategic plan for NAF Operations, including high visibility programs, and stewardship of NAF partners
    • Oversee logistics management on all programming and events, working with all NAF departments, engaging on events such as July 4, Gala, Opening Reception, and high visibility programs, delegating collaboration management to the appropriate staff

    Development

    • Collaborate with the Development team on Annual Fund Communications to ensure fundraising goals are met and adapt as needed
    • Coordinate communications team on Annual Giving Program and donor benefit communications and renewal processes
    • Coordinate with the Development team and ensure success with direct mail strategies are implemented effectively

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Minimum of 10 years in an executive communications role at a nonprofit, association, or corporation required
    • Minimum of 10 years of supervisory experience required
    • Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and experience in the successful development and execution of marketing, communications, and public relations campaigns
    • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational, and personal skills, with

    experience in managing multiple projects at a time

    • Experience overseeing the design and production of online and print collateral and publications
    • Excellent writing and editing skills
    • Experience developing and implementing successful social marketing strategies
    • Proven track record in developing a broad spectrum of proactive social media and traditional media relations campaigns and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to diverse audiences.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team
    • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities, proposing new ways of creating efficiencies, and guiding investment in people and systems
    • Flexible and a self-starter; able to manage multiple concurrent projects while also being highly detail-oriented, with an attention to quality, is a must
    • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred in the areas of communications and marketing related fields (e.g. marketing, business administration, management, advertising, journalism, and/or communications)

    Additional Qualifications A Plus

    • Experience collaborating with federal government employees and staff, as well as supervising contractors/vendors, preferred
    • Familiarity with MailChimp, Meltwater, WordPress, Canva, and NXT/Raiser's Edge is a plus
    • A passion for U.S. history, a commitment to education and civic engagement, and an enthusiasm for the mission of the Foundation and the National Archives
