    Position Summary

    The Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis seeks an Executive Director (ED) to build the Public Exchange (PX) at WashU from the ground up, based on the Public Exchange model founded at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2020.The WashU PX will be an independent but affiliated program, housed in the Brown School of Social Work. The PX teams at both universities will collaborate as an affiliated network, operating on the model created at USC, serving as resources to one another, and collaborating on cross regional projects that tackle common challenges in order to scale impact.

    Reporting to the Dean of the Brown School, the ED will be responsible for learning and leveraging the unique assets of faculty expertise across WashU to build new research partnerships that address critical issues in the St. Louis region and beyond.

    The ED will develop internal and external relationships, cultivate partners, and establish the PX operation within WashU and the Brown School, in alignment with the Brown School’s strategic plan Driving Equity 2030, WashU’s strategic plan Here and Next, and established WashU initiatives such as the Confluence Collaborative and others.

    Job Description

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

    Strategic Leadership

      • Works closely with the PX at USC team to understand the tools, processes, and essential components of the model and develops and executes a unique roadmap for PX at WashU that is positioned for success within the WashU and St. Louis regional ecosystems.
      • Works closely with the Dean and school leadership team to align the work of PX at WashU with the Community-Driven Science Strategic Initiative of Driving Equity 2030.

    Stakeholder Engagement

      • Builds and nurtures relationships with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, industry leaders, policymakers, community organizations, and philanthropic partners, to build awareness of PX at WashU and establish project partnerships.

    Project Development and Execution

      • Oversees the scoping, proposal development, piloting, and management of PX projects.

    Team Leadership

      • Recruits, mentors, and supervises a high-performing team of project manager(s) and, eventually, operations staff.

    Communications

      • Raises the profile of PX locally and regionally, and - in collaboration with PX at USC - nationally and internationally through coordinated communications, thought leadership, and as “public spokesperson” with engagement with media, at conferences, and in other platforms;

    Financial and Operational Management

      • Oversees the effective management of the budget, resources, and operations, in alignment with university policies and procedures.

    Fundraising

      • Partners with WashU’s Advancement team to cultivate strategic fundraising partners for PX.

    Impact and Reporting

      • Works closely with PX at USC to establish cross-site and WashU specific metrics and systems that assess the impact of Public Exchange’s projects and operations.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

      • Proven track record of success in developing and implementing innovative social impact initiatives; that require team building, collaboration, and community buy-in.

      • Ability to inspire and mobilize others toward a shared vision for PX at WashU.

    Salary Range

    $96,000.00 - $169,300.00 / Annually

    The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
