    Accounting Manager (Full-time)

    The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia (ACLU-VA) is hiring an Accounting Manager who will work across our organization to ensure our internal finance processes are efficient and easy to use, all our financial data is accurate and up-to-date, and all our teams have top-notch budget support. The Accounting Manager must be a creative systems-thinker who loves searching for root reasons and causes for problems, sees puzzles as an opportunity to rearrange pieces for maximum impact, and finds satisfaction in working with others to transform something strong into something superb.     What You'll Do

    You'll help us protect and advance the ACLU's mission by:

    • Leading the day-to-day financial needs of the organization, performing essential financial functions such as maintaining bank accounts, preparing invoices and deposits, and managing hundreds of AP and AR entries in accounting software each month to include collecting, coding, and processing all expenditures and other revenues;
    • Coordinating revenue sharing with National ACLU; and collaborating with the development team to prepare monthly reconciliation of donations and manage the finance side of the annual revenue reconciliation process with National ACLU;
    • Managing staff credit cards, check requests, and reimbursement processes, ensuring accurate recordkeeping and timely disbursement of payments;
    • Working with the Director of Finance & Administration and external accounting partner to ensure the monthly investment reconciliations, budget projections, union projection analysis, and proper general ledger entries are recorded and participate in the quarterly review of transactions;
    • Helping prepare the annual budget and tracking all expenditures in accordance with the budget, including grant expenditures; providing reports and facilitate regular meetings with each team to discuss budget variance and forecasting;
    • Collaborating with the Director of Finance & Administration to ensure compliance with internal financial policies, and local, state, and federal regulations and laws, including timely completion of reports and forms for the National ACLU and State of Virginia such as lobbying reports, charitable organization renewals, and corporation commission reports;
    • Ensuring compliance with separation of processes between the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities;
    • Managing end of calendar year income tax reporting requirements, ensuring the timely distribution of W-2 forms and accurate completion of 1099 forms;
    • Preparing financial documents and records for audit firm during the annual audit process;
    • Working with the Director of Finance & Administration to enhance Boards’ ability to fulfill their fiduciary responsibilities; and
    • Identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing solutions from start to finish; and create standards, training, and procedures to ensure staff adherence to ACLU-VA internal controls and finance policies while providing regular coaching across teams to meet 100% compliance.

    Who You Are

    Our "Must Have's"

    • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures and their application to basic accounting.
    • Experience operating in a fast-paced and/or high-volume accounting environment.
    • Possess the ability to maintain confidential information.
    • Three to five years of experience performing full life-cycle transactions.
    • Experience analyzing financial information to draw conclusions.
    • Ability to execute actions based on independent judgments.
    • Experience exercising discretion and confidentiality with sensitive information.
    • Proficiency with office technology and information systems, including online communications, word processing, spreadsheets, and accounting software (NetSuite or similar ERP system).
    • Willingness and ability to work beyond the normal workday, on weekends, and/or more than 40 hours a week as necessary.
    • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Virginia, and occasionally to other states for conferences and training.
    • A commitment to the mission and values of the ACLU of Virginia, to racial justice and civil rights issues, and an understanding that these issues are central to the overall protection of civil liberties.

    Salary is based on market factors and individual experience and abilities. The salary range for this position $69,870 to $95,000. To preserve the opportunity for advancement, we do not typically hire above the mid-point of the range of $82,435.     Due to COVID-19 and our desire to keep our employees safe, our organization is currently following a long-term hybrid work policy. This position will require a presence in the downtown Richmond office. All ACLU-VA staff members must reside within Virginia or within a 150-mile radius of our downtown Richmond office.
