    Position: Senior Director, Power Building

    Employment Type: Full-time, Exempt

    Reports To: Deputy Director, Strategic Programs

    Salary: $115,000 - $140,000

    Position Summary

    The Senior Director of Power Building (SDPB) is a key leadership position responsible for shaping and executing BFF’s organizing strategy to build and sustain the largest and most engaged base of Black feminist leaders in the country. In this role, the SDPB will lead and mentor a dynamic team focused on advancing BFF’s mission of shifting the material conditions for Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people through transformative organizing, strategic campaigns, and leadership development. The SDPB provides strategic leadership, direction, and coaching through a transformative organizing lens, ensuring the successful execution of organizing, membership, and campaign initiatives. In addition to overseeing membership development, this role leads BFF’s campaign work, driving issue-based campaigns that advance Black feminist political power. They ensure these campaigns align with BFF’s vision, engage members meaningfully, and build momentum for systemic change.

    The ideal candidate will be a visionary leader capable of setting a clear strategic direction, guiding the team in execution, and cultivating a deeply engaged membership that moves BFF’s mission and movement-building work forward.

    General Responsibilities:

    • Power Building & Campaign Strategy:
      • Develop and lead a comprehensive, multi-pronged organizing strategy aimed at building the largest and most engaged base of Black feminist leaders across the nation.
      • Design and oversee campaigns, advancing issues that directly impact our base.
    • Staff Leadership & Development:
      • Invest in the growth and development of staff, providing coaching and leadership to ensure a high-functioning, collaborative team.
      • Foster a culture of leadership development by training and supporting staff at all levels to thrive while building their capacity and skills in transformative organizing framework
    • Member Engagement & Democratic Participation:
      • Lead the Power Building team to ensure BFF’s membership is empowered and engaged through dynamic programming, training, and leadership opportunities.
      • ​​Create and maintain strong systems for member engagement and participation,
      • Oversee the creation and management of BFF’s membership programs which includes the development of the leadership pipeline, organizing schools, political education programs, steering committees, and convenings. These efforts will deepen members’ analysis and expand their toolbox for effective Black feminist activism.
    • Strategic Direction & Goal Setting:
      • Collaborate with senior leadership to set clear strategic goals for the organization’s power-building work, ensuring alignment with BFF’s broader objectives.
      • Continuously evaluate and refine strategies to increase membership engagement, expand BFF’s reach, and deepen the political education of members.
      • Provide visionary leadership that inspires commitment to BFF’s mission and ensures long-term sustainability.
    • Campaign & Member Impact:
      • Lead efforts to grow and strengthen BFF’s member base through targeted outreach, engagement, and retention strategies.
      • Collaborate with other teams to ensure campaigns are effectively integrated into membership development and organizing efforts.
      • Engage in collective visioning with staff in the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive organizing campaigns in multiple cities. These campaigns will include deep base-building, listening sessions, and ensuring that each city has an engaged base, with support and guidance from the Deputy Director of Strategic Programs.
      • Help cultivate collaborative culture within the PB team that is rooted in BFF Values and transformative organizing principles
      • Campaign development, strategic and tactical planning
      • Develop and implement a multi pronged strategic organizing campaign to advance our organizational strategic pillar
      • Develop and implement comprehensive campaign strategies.
      • Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of campaigns.

    You will thrive in this role if you have:

    • Proven track record of strategic leadership in organizing, campaign management, and membership development.
    • Deep commitment to Black feminist principles and a comprehensive understanding of the intersectional issues facing Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people.
    • Strong experience in staff management, leadership development, and building high-performing teams.
    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate a clear vision and inspire others to take action.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute multi-pronged strategies that engage and mobilize diverse groups of people.
    • Familiarity with the principles of transformative organizing, political education, and grassroots leadership development.
    • Experience with issue-based campaigns that center marginalized communities and advocate for systemic change.
    • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners, while maintaining focus on achieving organizational goals.

    Required Qualifications:

    • A minimum of 8 years experience working with community, labor, or electoral organizations where you’ve had success in developing and winning campaigns. Similar level of experience supervising staff, with a strong track record of building teams and developing staff leadership.

    • Commitment to racial, gender and economic justice and their intersections.
    • A strong commitment to our Black feminist values and to shifting the material conditions for Black women, girls, and gender expansive people in the US & across the diaspora

    Travel

    35% of travel is expected, including but not limited to BFF’s weeklong semiannual all-staff advances, occurring in the spring and fall of each calendar year, two senior leadership retreats as well as attendance at departmental advances the Deputy Director oversees. Intermittent travel related to BFF programming needs may also occur.

    Location

    Black Feminist Future is a hybrid organization, based in Atlanta, GA with staff working both remote and in office with mandatory in person staff and team meetings and in office visits during the year. This position is located in Atlanta and expected to work in the office twice per week. A relocation stipend may be provided.
