    Mid-Hudson Energy Transition (MHET) is a growing nonprofit working to advance energy, housing, and economic justice for low-income and communities of color throughout the Hudson Valley. We empower communities to own and share renewable energy, create healthier buildings, and join in community wealth-building to strengthen the resilience in the Hudson Valley in the face of climate change.

    Position Overview

    The Deputy Director will serve as a key leader and partner to the Executive Director, overseeing the internal operations, programs, and systems of the organization. This role is designed to support MHET’s rapid growth and ensure that all aspects of the organization are running effectively, efficiently, and in alignment with its mission and values.

    The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, an experienced manager, and a passionate advocate for equity and justice. They will possess the ability to oversee multiple teams, manage complex projects, and drive measurable results. Their leadership style will emphasize compassion, collaboration, inclusivity, and joy. This role is both strategic and hands-on, ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

    Key Responsibilities

    Organizational Leadership & Strategic Partnership

    • Serve as the second-in-command to the Executive Director, supporting organizational strategy, vision, and decision-making.
    • Act as a key liaison to the Board of Directors, preparing materials and contributing to board meetings and governance.
    • Co-lead the implementation of MHET’s strategic plan, ensuring organizational goals and priorities are met across departments.
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director to identify opportunities for program expansion, operational improvement, and long-term growth.

    Program Management & Oversight

    • Supervise program managers and directors to oversee the planning, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of key MHET programs, including: Energy Innovation, Home Upgrade Grants, and potentially the Home Energy Loan Program and its associated HELP Fund.
    • Co-develop project plans, budgets, and timelines, ensuring resources are allocated effectively and outcomes are achieved.
    • Support the development and tracking of program metrics to measure impact and outcomes, providing regular updates to the Executive Director and Board.

    Operations, Finance & Systems Management

    • Oversee organizational operations and financial systems, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and alignment with strategic goals.
    • Work with the Operations & Finance Director to develop and manage budgets, financial forecasts, and audit processes.
    • Lead the implementation of internal systems and processes (e.g., Asana, QuickBooks, HubSpot), ensuring operational effectiveness.
    • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, as well as funder requirements.

    Team & Staff Leadership

    • Supervise managers and directors across programs, operations, and finance, providing coaching, accountability, and support to ensure high performance.
    • Promote a culture of equity, collaboration, and professional development, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
    • Work closely with the Executive Director to build a strong and diverse team, supporting recruitment, hiring, and retention strategies.

    Stakeholder Engagement & External Relations

    • Represent MHET in key partnerships, coalitions, and external initiatives, particularly with funders, community organizations, and policymakers.
    • Collaborate with the Development team on fundraising strategies, including grant writing and relationship-building with funders.
    • Act as an ambassador for MHET’s mission, fostering relationships with community members, organizations, and stakeholders.

    Ideal Skills & Experience

    • At least 10 years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, preferably in energy, housing, or environmental justice sectors.
    • Strong financial acumen, with experience overseeing budgets, financial reporting, and compliance.
    • Works effectively across teams, promoting efficiency and accountability to reach shared goals.
    • Demonstrated commitment to racial, social, and economic justice, with experience working in and with historically underserved communities.
    • Excellent communication, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
    • Strong technical proficiency, with experience using tools like QuickBooks, Google Workspace, HubSpot, and Asana.
    • Expertise in clean energy policy, building decarbonization, and/or community-based energy solutions.
    • Experience with program evaluation and impact measurement.
    • Familiarity with managing loan programs or community investment funds.

    Location, Schedule and Availability:

    Mid-Hudson Energy Transition is located in Kingston, NY. The daily work schedule is Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, with flexibility for weekend or weeknight meetings or events as needed. The work can be performed on-site, hybrid, or remotely for exceptional candidates that do not live near our office.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000. Benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance, retirement plans with a 4% employer match, professional development opportunities, and unlimited paid time off.
