    • Identify needs for training/education/support on legal issues related to civil rights and civil liberties.
    • Collaborate with advocacy, legal, and communications teams to align engagement efforts with organizational goals.
    • Recruit, train, and support volunteers in educational, advocacy, and legal roles to help support and enhance the quality and quantity of ACLU work across Maine.
    • Develop, plan, and implement opportunities for staff (and eventually volunteers) to provide trainings, staff events, and offer education to organizations and groups around the state. Activities could include book clubs, court watch, workshops, trainings, film screenings, music performances, tabling at fairs and festivals, as well as events and gatherings for specific groups or in specific geographic areas.
    • Activate supporters through organizing phone banks, rallies, lobby days, and other advocacy activities.
    • Maintain volunteer management systems and data management processes to keep accurate records of engagement activities.
    • Together with senior leadership, evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives and outreach efforts to inform future strategies.
    • Willingness to work beyond 9-5 as needed, including occasional weekend events and travel.

    Personal Characteristics:

Ideally, the successful candidate will be the following:

    • A creative, flexible, well-organized, and reliable person who can handle and prioritize multiple activities and responsibilities and manage a demanding schedule; a team player who is able to work independently, jointly, and under pressure; willing to learn; a self-starter and finisher.
    • Personally committed to advancing the ACLU’s values, mission, goals, and programs with an understanding of a broad range of civil liberties and civil rights issues and their implications.
    • Someone who displays the cultural competence needed to work with a diverse team and effectively partner with diverse communities.
