POSITION SUMMARY
The VOBS Safety Manager (SM) plays an integral position that helps drive safety initiatives school wide. The Safety Manager provides administrative and tactical support to the Director of Programs (DOP). Specific areas of focus include: incident reporting and analysis, emergency response support, Safety Reviews and other safety oversight projects that streamline systems and processes for VOBS.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Risk Management
- Support implementation of the National Safety Standards throughout VOBS
- Contribute to the development of VOBS annual safety priorities
- Support the DOP with the Trimester Safety Reports
- Monitor compliance with Outward Bound USA (OBUSA) and VOBS policies and procedures.
- Work with program leadership, student services and others to track trends and themes schoolwide to discuss with the DOP and propose actions to address emerging risks
- Support VOBS safety audits and provide ongoing tracking, and that action items are completed
- Plan and manage Safety Reviews, as required by OBUSA
- Conduct incident investigations, as directed by the DOP
- Support ACCT compliance with the Ely Ropes Course and provide support/training as needed
Emergency Response System
- Maintain VOBS Emergency Response System and train staff in its implementation
- Support on call duties as required, including stepping into Emergency Response roles as needed
Incident Reporting Oversight
- Oversee incident reporting and the incident reporting database in line with OBUSA standards
- Reviews all VOBS incidents in the Outward Bound Incident Reporting database
- Track trends and themes schoolwide to discuss with DOP and recommend actions to address emerging risks.
- Work with program admin to hold staff accountable for completing incident analysis and action items.
- Ensure program and admin staff are trained to properly enter incidents in the database; provide feedback and training when needed.
Safety Documents
- Work with DOP to update annual safety documents (e.g. Emergency Response Plan, Charter Operating Policies and Procedures, Workplace Health and Safety Policies and Procedures, Local Emergency Response Plans, etc)
Program and Safety Team
- Is a member of the Program and Safety Team
- Takes part in meetings and brings safety focused topics to the group
- Provides input and support to annual Program and Safety priorities
- Supports the team in annually managing school wide initiatives
- Adheres to local operating procedures, safety policies and emergency procedures as outlined in the field staff manual
KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES
- Experience with safety risk systems or incident analysis
- Experience with workplace health and safety or OSHA rules and regulations preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership and organization skills
- Able to work across a variety of programs and departments
- Able to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously
- Able to have open, honest, and difficult conversations, including the capability to give and receive feedback with colleagues
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment with field staff, program management staff and organizational leadership.
SKILLS
- Demonstrated technical skills in several VOBS program environments which include canoeing, rock climbing, multi-day backpacking, ropes courses, kayaking and dogsledding/winter camping
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficient computer/software skills or ability to learn quickly (Google Suite, Salesforce, etc)
- Maintains a motor vehicle record within OBUSA policies and procedures; ability to drive a 15-passenger vehicle with trailer in all seasons
- Strong written and oral communication skills
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of 3-5 years experience in outdoor/experiential education, youth development, or similar educational field.
- Possess the following certifications: Water Safety or Swift Water Rescue, Wilderness First Responder (WFR), and CPR or able to obtain upon hire.
- Workplace Health and Safety OSHA 10 certification or able to obtain upon hire.
WORK CONDITIONS
- Ability to work a non-standard, flexible schedule as training and program schedule demands, including potential rotation of on-call responsibilities
- Ability to travel to all VOBS program locations as needed
- Ability to work a varied and flexible schedule including weekends
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds regularly and up to 70 pounds occasionally
- Capability to sit or stand at a desk or computer for prolonged periods, 60% or more of the time
- Must be able to participate in all site and course activities and maintain ample energy, strength and focus to aid students and instructors, with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Ability to go into the field as needed, particularly during an incident if needed.
- Ability to perform activities such as lifting, crawling, bending, carrying, and pulling, with or without reasonable accommodations
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position.
Salary range of $41,000 - $53,560
