    Legal Aid DC seeks a Supervising Attorney for its Intake Program.

    Since 1932, Legal Aid has provided civil legal assistance to clients in individual cases and engaged in systemic reform. Currently, we provide individual representation in consumer law, domestic violence/family law, housing, public benefits, and appellate matters. We also work on immigration matters and help individuals with the collateral consequences of their involvement with the criminal justice system. From the experiences of our clients, we identify opportunities for law reform, public policy advocacy, and systemic impact and appellate litigation.

    The Supervising Attorney will supervise Intake Program staff and report to the Intake Program Director.

    Responsibilities

    Supervising Attorney and Professional Support Staff:

    • Supervise and guide unit staff; provide feedback to supervisees, on any work product. Unit staff may include Legal Assistants, Intake Generalists, Intake Specialist, and Staff Attorneys.
    • Participate in performance evaluations; support supervisees’ professional development by working to identify strengths, areas for growth and improvement, and goals.
    • Perform administrative and management functions necessary for supervision and organizational operations, including reviewing leave requests and timekeeping, and ensuring staff follow proper policies relating to case management and recordkeeping.
    • Supervise and help guide Legal Aid Staff during intake in all Legal Aid’s practice areas at community-based offices and intake sites, in-person, online, and over the phone.

    Leadership and Management of the Program:

    • Work in Legal Aid’s community office in Anacostia, and other community-based offices at least one day per week.
    • Conduct and supervise general intake in person.
    • Assist with clearing conflicts.
    • Work with the Intake Director and Intake Coordinator in managing Legal Aid’s case management system (LegalServer).
    • Assist with processing online and phone intakes from Legal Aid’s Online Intake site and other intake sources.
    • Work with the Intake Director to review and assign new cases; convene regular program meetings; identify or lead training opportunities; create uniform systems and polices for the unit.
    • Maintain a modest caseload of primarily advice and brief services matters, with the possibility of some extended representation cases, either as sole counsel or co-counsel.
    • Conduct internal trainings: including, but not limited to, LegalServer, Intake Interviewing, and Conflict checks.
    • Provide holistic advocacy by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of legal issues relevant to Legal Aid’s practice areas and client community;
    • Manage referrals from the DC Bar Foundation’s coordinated intake referral program.

    Leadership of the Organization:

    • Consider the impact of proposed organization-wide policies or actions on the Intake Program, as well as the impact on the entire organization.
    • Participate in organization-wide discussions and initiatives.
    • Facilitate Know Your Rights, including fielding requests for training, developing training materials, identifying and collaborating with trainers, and maintaining a database of all training and community-focused engagements.
    • Develop and maintain accessible community education and self-help materials for self-represented litigants.
    • Occasionally work on nights and/or weekends as necessary to be responsive to client, community, and operational needs, including, but not limited to supervising weekend intake hours.

    People & Culture:

    • Actively participate as part of team of Supervisors and Project Directors in crafting and advancing organizational initiatives.
    • Help to foster and reflect an inclusive organizational culture.

    Required Skills and Experience

    Membership or eligibility for membership in the DC bar is required. Candidates for the Supervising Attorney position should have the following:

    • A minimum of seven years of experience in legal services.
    • A demonstrated commitment to social, economic, and racial justice.
    • The ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and organizational responsibilities.
    • The ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with clients, staff, partner organizations, pro bono attorneys, the judiciary, and members of local legal services and advocacy coalitions.
    • Ability to work skillfully, both independently and collaboratively with teams.
    • Experience managing or supervising attorneys preferred.
    • Proficiency or fluency in Spanish, Amharic or another language spoken by our client community, preferred but not required.

    Salary and Benefits

    The attorney will be paid in accordance with Legal Aid’s Supervisor policy based on years of relevant full-time experience. Lateral hires will receive credit for years of relevant work experience. Starting salaries are as follows:

      • Supervising attorney with 7 years of relevant experience: $117,559
      • Supervising attorney with 8 years of relevant experience: $119,463
      • Supervising attorney with 9 years of relevant experience: $121,458
