For over 25 years, NYRP has invested in and stewarded parks and gardens throughout the city’s five boroughs to strengthen communities, promote food sovereignty, and counter environmental and social injustice.

    Position Summary

    Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance (DOF) manages the organization’s finance and accounting functions. This role provides oversight of the outsourced financial accounting vendor, has one direct report (Office Manager), and works collaboratively across departments at NYRP. The DOF will be a key strategic partner and advisor to the Senior Staff, Trustees and department heads on all financial and business matters, providing leadership to guide and shape the organization’s financial strategy to support its fiscal health.

    The position is hybrid. Office staff are expected to work at least 2 days per week from the office, and the remaining 3 days are remote.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Oversee and manage all aspects of the relationship with the outsourced financial accounting firm that supports NYRP’s financial and accounting operations, activities and fiscal reporting.
    • Manage critical accounting and finance relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
    • Oversee all accounting and finance staff and vendors.
    • Collaborate with all department heads to ensure fiscal information is flowing in a timely and useful manner.
    • Manage relationships with all banks and financial institutions.
    • Serve as liaison to the Finance & Investment Committee.
    • Analyze monthly financial statements and provide feedback to the accounting team.
    • Present monthly financial statements to Senior Staff, Trustees and Finance Committee.
    • Manage organizational cash position and facilitate drawdowns/transfers; update and manage the cash flow forecast for monthly review with the Leadership Team.
    • In collaboration with the outsourced accountant, oversee the annual audit process.
    • Develop and manage the annual organizational budget and budget development process, including all departmental and/or programmatic budgets; conduct monthly meetings with all department heads to review budgeted versus actual results.
    • In collaboration with the Advancement (fundraising/development) team, develop budget for grants and update Advancement Revenue tracker on a regular basis.
    • Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions and respectively ensure that all bills are approved and paid in a timely manner, and that funds are received timely against invoices issued by NYRP.
    • Provide interim and final fiscal reports for funders on an as-needed basis.
    • Maintain updated and documented fiscal policies and procedures.
    • Supervise the Office Manager who amongst other duties, supports various HR administrative support functions including payroll, time and attendance, PTO management, recruitment and onboarding, and other HR processes; serve as liaison to NYRP HR outsourced consultants on the administration of various HR practices.
    • Manage organizational insurance renewals and requests.
    • Review the fiscal software needs of the organization annually and make recommendations to the Leadership team as appropriate.

    Education and Experience Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; CPA or MBA are a plus.
    • Minimum of seven (7) years’ experience managing the finance and accounting function of a comparable size or larger nonprofit organization; experience with an environmental, civic or public parks organization a plus.
    • Must have strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting.
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and QuickBooks.
