About NYAAF

Founded in 2001, the New York Abortion Access Fund supports New Yorkers and people traveling to New York State to access abortion care through financial assistance, case management, and connections to other resources. For twenty years, NYAAF operated as a volunteer collective. In September 2022, we hired our first staff person and we are now a small but mighty team of six made up of people with deep community ties—including people of color, people who have had abortions and used abortion funds, parents, and former abortion fund volunteers.

NYAAF operates a volunteer-managed helpline that fields calls in English and Spanish from people facing barriers to accessing an abortion. Our intake staff and volunteer case managers provide compassionate support to people facing barriers, misinformation, and stigma, and move funds directly to ensure they can access the care they need and deserve.

Following the Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, more people than ever are traveling to New York to access the abortion care they need and deserve. However, more than half of our callers remain resident New Yorkers, because while New York is much more abortion friendly than other states, many barriers still exist. NYAAF directly fills the gaps created by these barriers and has made abortion access a reality for thousands of callers. Since the overturn of Roe in June 2022, NYAAF has supported callers from 37 states (including NY) and 22 countries. In 2024, we pledged over 2 million dollars to directly pay for abortions—the highest annual amount in our history–and supported more than 2700 callers from across the country and beyond.

As New York’s only abortion fund, we believe no one should be denied access to an abortion because of where they live or how much money they make. Funding abortion is a radical act of community care.

Position Overview

Reporting to and working in close partnership with the Director of Programs, the newly-created role of Intake Manager will play a pivotal role in the expansion of our intake program as it adapts to the changing abortion access landscape, increased demand for our services, and the holistic needs of our growing caller base. They will also serve as direct, frontline support to callers seeking financial assistance for their abortions, with a particular emphasis on supporting out-of-state travelers to New York.

The intake team consists of a Program Director, Intake Coordinator, and a network of 60+ volunteer case managers who manage NYAAF’s call lines. The Intake Manager will be deeply committed to reproductive justice and will bring expertise in client-centered and trauma-informed approaches to case management, centering the holistic needs of callers and the communities they come from in every aspect of their work.

Roles & Responsibilities

This is not a complete list of duties and responsibilities. As the landscape of abortion access continues to evolve and NYAAF adapts to the changing needs of our movement and organization, this job description will be iterative.

Program Management and Strategy (30%)

• Contribute to the strengthening, expanding, and managing of NYAAF’s caller services, ensuring that our programs are client-centered and trauma-informed and all callers are provided with compassionate, non-judgmental, and whole-person case management.
• Collaborate with the Director of Programs to scale the current pilot program and develop a full practical support program, expanding NYAAF services to ensure callers get support beyond funding for their abortion, such as through travel and childcare stipends.
• Provide high level support to the development, implementation, and management of a new caller engagement program, offering emotional support following callers’ abortions and opportunities for feedback, leadership, storytelling, and advocacy.
• Manage the intake database, Salesforce, with the support of the Intake Coordinator, and maintain clear, organized, and intentional data collection processes. Use data to strategically inform NYAAF service delivery policies.
• Develop and lead presentations on caller trends for staff meetings, board meetings, conferences, and other events.
• Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with abortion providers across New York and the country.

Direct Caller Services (40%)

• Lead on coordination for callers from Outside New York state with the support of volunteer case managers.
• Co-manage practical support pilot program with the Director of Programs, coordinating local travel and providing rideshare gift cards.
• Once developed, lead the implementation of a full practical support program, including travel, lodging, meal, and childcare support.
• Provide case management for special cases with complex funding and logistical needs or when volunteer case managers or Coordinator(s) are unable to work their shifts and/or to alleviate large caseloads.

Volunteer Coordination (25%)

• Serve as a support system to volunteer case managers, providing guidance, and filling in on the helpline when necessary.
• Review budget requests for large-balance pledges, vetting approvals in collaboration with the Director of Programs and Executive Director.
• Develop and facilitate volunteer case manager recruitment, trainings, town halls, and convenings, ensuring racial and reproductive justice are centered in all programming.
• Manage volunteer case manager appreciation and retention efforts.
• Drive NYAAF’s transitions out of a volunteer model.

Other (5%)

• Participate in regular check-in meetings with the Director of Programs, Intake Coordinator, Executive Director, and future intake staff.
• Participate in regular staff meetings and retreats with full staff.
• Contribute to organizational learning and culture.
• Stay abreast of changing abortion landscape and regulations, in order to be able to provide accurate and timely support.
• Other tasks as assigned and needed.

Qualifications

As an abortion fund, we first and foremost seek to center and foster the leadership of people who have had abortions, people who have used abortion funds, and people who have experienced difficulty accessing abortion. We also seek to center groups most impacted by reproductive oppression and other intersecting injustices in our leadership. Black, Indigenous peoples, and other people of color, trans and gender nonconforming people, folks from low-income communities, people with disabilities, immigrants, young parents, and people at the intersections of these identities and other marginalized groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required

• Be located in New York State (applicants in surrounding states, particularly New Jersey, will be considered on a case-by-case basis).
• 5-7 years of relevant experience working in a non-profit, government agency, or healthcare setting.
• 3+ years of frontline experience providing trauma-informed direct services to people in need, ideally through a helpline or other crisis support service.
• Specialized training on client-centered, trauma-informed care frameworks and employing principles of safety, trust, choice, and collaboration.
• Strong emotional regulation and self awareness (particularly when being exposed to second hand trauma), and ability to effectively manage high stress situations through self-care practices.
• Demonstrated commitment to reproductive justice and a liberatory framework that centers racial, gender, economic, LGBTQIA+, and disability justice.
• Strong project management, time management, problem solving, and planning skills, with a demonstrated ability to take initiative, drive projects forward independently, and multitask.
• Willingness to support a culture of collective wellness that centers radical kindness, joy, and accountability.

Preferred

• Degree in social work.
• Experience working on the frontlines of abortion access, such as supporting intake with an abortion fund or practical support network or serving as a doula or abortion clinic worker.
• CRM Database experience; experience in Salesforce a plus.
• Experience working in a fully remote environment.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus.
