About the Alliance for a Safe Oregon

The Alliance for a Safe Oregon hiring an Executive Director. The Alliance is at an important moment in our organizational history. We are poised to make a lasting impact, shaping gun tragedy prevention policy and making safer communities for all Oregonians. Gun tragedies impact all cross-sections of Oregonians. In our cities, Black, Latino, and Tribal community members face disproportionate rates of firearm homicide. In rural Oregon, we lose too many community members to firearm suicide, particularly among men 45+ and those who have served our country. Oregon is at a moment where true change is possible. We need an Executive Director who can help Oregon lead the way.

The Alliance for a Safe Oregon operates three connected organizations: a 501(c)4, which leads policy and advocacy on Gun Tragedy prevention; a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, which leads education and implementation efforts; and a PAC, focused on electing leaders who prioritize community safety over the gun lobby.

    Executive Director

The Executive Director (ED) provides the strategic leadership, vision and direction of the Alliance, working in partnership with the Board, partners, and impacted community members to set an ambitious vision for gun tragedy prevention in the state of Oregon. The ED is expected to grow the Alliance with a major focus on:

A Bold Policy Vision Grounded in the Communities We Serve

    • Shaping and leading a bold, long-term vision for safety, rooted in the needs of those most impacted by gun tragedies while respecting Oregon firearm owners;
    • Ability to turn that vision into action by advancing evidence-based state and local policies, programs and public investments to reduce rates of firearm homicide, suicide, unintentional shootings, mass shootings, and the fear and anxiety they create.
    • Developing and leading, in partnerships with stakeholders, implementation plans to ensure Oregon’s existing gun death and injury prevention policies are effectively and equitably implemented, leading to measurable reductions and change.

    Sustainable Funding and Finances

    • Achieving a sustainable funding strategy, both for the organization and for gun death and injury prevention implementation across the state. This will include developing a diversified fundraising plan, developing relationships and trust with important Oregon and regional foundations/funders and exploring potential new opportunities with corporate partners.
    • The Executive Director will cultivate, solicit and steward donors at all levels of the organization, with a focus on bringing in and retaining major donors, and create a culture of fundraising on the Board.
    • Financial acumen, ethics and transparency, including the ability to develop and manage program, grant, and organizational budgets and provide accurate reports to the Board, stakeholders, and funders and ensure organizational legal compliance.

    Program Development and Implementation

    • Oversee the growth and implementation of meaningful, high quality program strategy, services, and evaluation, in particular on the 501(c)3 nonprofit side of our organization.
    • Partner with existing organizations (such as gun safety, public health, Veterans and mental health advocacy and service organizations) as well as existing state infrastructure (such as schools and District Attorney’s offices) to implement existing and new community safety policy/programs across the state.

    Organizational Culture and Leadership

    • Lead, inspire and coach a strong, inclusive team where staff can both show up as themselves and be challenged to grow into new areas of responsibility. Drive an equitable organizational culture through transparent decision-making, high staff engagement, and clear organizational values.
    • Build a strong governance Board, deepening their ability to support the Organization’s mission and partnering with the Board to ensure our programs have the highest impact for the state. Work closely with the Board to set goals and metrics.

    Communications and Profile Rising

    • Increase awareness and visibility of the Alliance as a collaborative and leading gun tragedy prevention advocacy organization in the state, with national impact.
    • Represent the Alliance, its partners, programs, and successes at community events, in the legislature, and in the media.
