Who We Are
Lambda Legal is a national advocacy organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights for the LGBTQ+ community and everyone living with HIV through impact litigation, education, and public policy work. Since 1973, Lambda Legal has used impact litigation and other advocacy tools to decriminalize same-sex relationships; challenge discrimination against LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV in the workplace, in the home, in schools, in health care, and in the military; and protect LGBTQ+ families, including by winning and defending marriage equality. Our clients are not charged for legal representation or advocacy and Lambda Legal receives no government funding. Headquartered in New York City, Lambda Legal also has regional offices in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, and Washington, DC.
We believe that serving the full breadth of the LGBTQ+ and HIV communities requires cultural competency and enthusiasm for diversity of all kinds. To be successful, we must approach our work with an understanding that discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status is not the only obstacle to achieving full formal and lived equality for LGBTQ+ people and everyone living with HIV; rather, we recognize the intersectional nature of discrimination, specifically including biases based on race, religion, national origin, gender, disability, education, and class. Considering this reality, we prioritize a proactive commitment to counteracting these biases and their compounding effects in the work we do, but also in how we work together as an organization.
National Director of Individual Philanthropy
The National Director of Individual Philanthropy reports to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) at Lambda Legal and is accountable for ensuring that the organization establishes and maintains strong relationships with individual major donors and institutional funders around the country with the aim of generating the revenue and momentum necessary to advance our vital mission.
To fulfill on this aim, the NDIP leads the managerial function of individual and community philanthropy – this includes but is not limited to: facilitating the annual goal-setting process, developing the team-wide strategies, leading the creation of team-wide standard operating procedures, overseeing approximately 15 team members (6 direct reports), supporting Lambda Legal’s $180 million comprehensive campaign, and evaluating team results to position Lambda Legal as a best-in-class fundraising and stewardship operation and to meet its annual revenue goals.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced nonprofit fundraising professional with a track record of building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with donors and has solid experience or familiarity with planned giving to support the work of Lambda Legal’s Legacy (Planned) Giving team. Since events – from small-scale house parties to ticketed, highly produced events – are the primary means by which Lambda Legal engages a majority of its individual donor base around the country, the successful candidate will have solid events fundraising experience.
Furthermore, the NDIP oversees Lambda Legal’s five Regional Directors, who manage their respective regional teams of Major Gifts Officers, Senior Major Gifts Officers, and Office Managers/Regional Program Coordinators. While the primary focus of the NDIP is on the fundraising activities outlined above for individual major gifts work, the NDIP has a tremendous opportunity to support the Regional Directors in co-designing and executing localized fundraising strategies that also engage regional foundations, corporations, and law firms; and in collaboration with the Operations team, supporting their oversight of regional office operations.
