What is the Good Health Project?
The Good Health Project is a new project, launched in late 2024, that will provide free or low-cost legal representation to healthcare professionals and institutions seeking to provide transgender healthcare in a rapidly-changing legal environment and rising atmosphere of government lawlessness. Our focus will be on advising healthcare providers on how to provide the maximum extent of services allowable by law, avoid over-compliance with the government’s attempts to restrict healthcare services through threats and rhetoric, and avoid litigation. We also provide policy advocacy advice, know-your-rights education, and other services our clients need to continue their provision of care. The Good Health Project works closely with other transgender, LGBTQ, civil rights, health, and legal organizations, and is part of the larger movement to preserve and defend civil rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
What are the jobs?
The Good Health Project is hiring lawyers as counsel or senior counsel. The Good Health Project’s lawyers will provide legal advice to healthcare professionals and institutions seeking to preserve and expand transgender healthcare services. Examples of the areas in which we will provide advice include, but aren’t limited to, providing care to patients traveling from out-of-state, civil rights laws’ application to transgender healthcare, malpractice insurance, opening a new practice, shield laws, and privacy laws. We will also assist our clients to advocate with regulators and elected officials regarding ways to improve access. Our representation of clients will often be undertaken jointly with co-counsel with relevant subject matter expertise, and/or with local counsel. The primary work products will be client memos and different varieties of letters in support of our clients. Although the Good Health Project’s principal aim is advising its clients in avoiding litigation, participation in litigation may be a possibility. The counsel will work primarily under the direct supervision of the senior counsel; the senior counsel will report to the project director but will be expected to work without close supervision. The Good Health Project’s initial team will also work together to establish the policies and workplace culture of the Good Health Project. Because these are new positions, there will be significant flexibility for you to define their responsibilities in a way that best serves your unique talents and our clients’ and our team’s needs.
