    ROLE: BETTER BUILDER DIRECTOR

    LOCATION: AUSTIN, DALLAS OR HOUSTON TX

    The Better Builder Director will lead the Workers Defense Better Builder® Program. The program was developed by construction workers to raise workplace standards and improve the lives of construction workers and their families. Since 2012, the Better Builder® Program has impacted the lives of over 50,000 construction workers in Texas. For many Workers on Better Builder® sites, they receive workplace benefits like workers compensation coverage, OSHA safety training and a living wage for the first time in their careers. The Better Builder Director will advance the implementation of programs in Central Texas and expand the program into other key areas in Texas. The Director will supervise a team and support with broader membership and organizational goals.

    THE ROLE IN ACTION:

    • Lead the implementation and expansion of the Better Builder® program in Texas
    • Work with Workers Defense staff to implement the overall organizations statewide policy agenda and organizing work
    • Lead and supervise a team within the Better Builder Department
    • Work with developers and owners to raise awareness of the Better Builder® Program and build and strengthen relationships
    • Assist with fundraising efforts
    • Serve on the Workers Defense Senior Leadership Team
    • Work closely across departments to develop and execute base building and leadership development plans
    • Foster, strengthen, and maintain partnerships with allied organizations across the state
    • Other duties as assigned

    WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

    • Two to five years of policy, organizing or labor experience
    • Two to five years of management experience
    • Ability to maintain attention to detail while managing multiple responsibilities
    • Proven ability to work collaboratively, support and develop staff, interns, and volunteers, and contribute to the success of a team
    • Extensive experience in public speaking, coalition-building, and writing
    • Effective policy analysis skills
    • Commitment to WD's identity as a member-led organization, and commitment to advancing racial, economic, and social justice
    • Strong communication skills and an ability to engage diverse audiences, including folks from industry, elected officials, community members and allies
    • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to build strong relationships with ally organizations and other stakeholders
    • Ability to travel occasionally throughout Texas and nationally
    • Ability to work irregular hours (evenings or weekends)
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish required

    WHAT WE OFFER:

    • Workers Defense has a salary scale that is based on experience. The starting salary for the position is $90,000.
    • A $1,000 annual language stipend for English-Spanish bilingual staff.
    • Employer-paid medical, vision, dental, and life insurance.
    • Paid leave consists of 10 days vacation, 10 days sick, and 5 days personal.
    • Paid holidays in addition to office closures the week of Thanksgiving and December 23rd through 31st.
    • Every other Friday off.
    • Retirement plan with company match of 3% (as per our Personnel Policies Manual).
    • Parental leave of 12 weeks paid (after probationary period - 90 days from hire).
