    Al Otro Lado is a binational legal services and immigrant rights organization serving immigrants, asylum seekers and deported persons in Southern California, Tijuana, México, and beyond. We approach cases using a multidisciplinary, client-centered, abolitionist, harm reduction-based lens, and engage in zealous individual representation, human rights monitoring and impact litigation to protect the rights of individual immigrants and challenge systemic practices that violate the human rights of immigrant communities. We leverage vital partnerships with community-based organizations and academic institutions, and engage thousands of volunteers to maximize our impact and help build a broad-based immigrant justice movement.

    HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER

    We are seeking an organized and detail-oriented Human Resources Manager to join our team at our San Diego or Los Angeles office. This hybrid role offers an exciting opportunity to play a key part in managing essential HR functions including payroll, employee relations, recruitment, benefits administration, and compliance. As part of our HR team, you will help foster a positive and productive work environment and contribute to the success of our organization.

    This position is a hybrid role based out of our San Diego or Los Angeles office with both in-person and remote work opportunities. Applicants ideally would have the ability to travel to Tijuana, Mexico up to four times per year

    This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting salary of $90k

    Job Responsibilities:

    Payroll Administration

    • Coordinate with payroll providers to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll for all employees.
    • Verify timecards, resolve discrepancies, and ensure proper pay adjustments (overtime, bonuses, deductions).
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws related to payroll.
    • Maintain accurate payroll records and respond to employee inquiries regarding payroll matters.

    Employee Relations

    • Serve as a point of contact for staff to address concerns, grievances, and workplace issues.
    • Foster a positive, inclusive work environment through conflict resolution and mediation.
    • Ensure compliance with workplace policies, including anti-discrimination, harassment, and retaliation policies.
    • Conduct investigations into employee complaints and provide recommendations for resolution.
    • Organize and implement employee engagement activities, training, and development programs.

    Recruitment & Onboarding

    • Develop and post job descriptions to attract a diverse range of candidates.
    • Screen resumes, schedule interviews, and communicate with candidates.
    • Assist hiring managers in evaluating and interviewing candidates.
    • Facilitate background checks, reference checks, and onboarding processes.
    • Ensure compliance with Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) regulations.

    Benefits Administration

    • Oversee employee enrollment and changes in health insurance, retirement plans, and disability coverage.
    • Communicate benefits options and updates to employees.
    • Ensure compliance with COBRA, FMLA, and other benefits-related regulations.

    Compliance & Record-Keeping

    • Maintain employee records in compliance with legal and organizational requirements.
    • Ensure adherence to labor laws (wage and hour regulations, OSHA standards, employment eligibility).
    • Prepare and submit HR-related reports to leadership and regulatory bodies.

    Policy Development & Implementation

    • Assist in the development and updating of employee handbooks and HR policies.
    • Communicate new policies and procedures to staff and ensure consistent implementation.
    • Provide training to managers on HR policies, employee relations, and compliance matters.

    Performance Management

    • Coordinate performance review processes and track review timelines.
    • Support managers in addressing performance issues and implementing improvement plans.
    • Document disciplinary actions and ensure compliance with company procedures.

    Additional Duties

    • Monitor and address trends in employee turnover, satisfaction, and engagement.
    • Manage HR systems and software to ensure data integrity and accessibility.
    • Collaborate with finance and leadership teams to align HR strategies with organizational goals.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
    • Preferred SHRM - CP or HRCI PHR certification.
    • Understanding of Mexico Labor Law and Employment Compliance strongly preferred.
    • At least 3 years of experience in an HR generalist role, with a focus on payroll, employee relations, and recruitment.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local labor laws, as well as HR best practices.
    • Experience with HRIS systems, payroll software, and performance management tools.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively at all levels of the organization.
    • Excellent problem-solving, conflict resolution, and organizational skills.
    • High level of integrity and discretion when handling sensitive information.
