    Survivor Outreach Services Coordinator

    Starting annual salary: $63,000-$65,000

    Location: Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, Dorchester, MA

    The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute (LDBPI) is a center of healing, teaching, and learning for families and communities dealing with murder, trauma, grief, and loss. We aim to transform society's response to homicide, ensuring all families are treated with dignity and compassion. Founded in 1994 after the murder of Dorchester resident, Louis D. Brown, The LDBPI is recognized across the state and country for the best practices in the field of homicide response. With over 30 years of experience, the LDBPI continues to innovate and grow.

    Role Summary

    We seek a Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) Coordinator dedicated to meeting the unique needs of families impacted by murder. The ideal candidate will be collaborative, communicative, and experienced in serving diverse communities. The SOS Coordinator will report to the Survivor Outreach & Support Manager and work closely with other Coordinators and Program staff.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide a safe meeting place for families within 24-72 hours of a homicide.
    • Conduct survivor intakes through in-person, virtual, or telephone sessions.
    • Address practical needs of survivors from death notification to funerals, including designing funeral programs and memorial buttons.
    • Maintain regular communication with families to assess needs and monitor progress.
    • Develop and monitor long-term plans for survivors' healing and provide advocacy as needed.
    • Collaborate with other service providers for mental health services, counseling, housing, financial resources, spiritual guidance, etc.
    • Advocate for clients' rights under the Victims Bill of Rights and MA Bereavement Leave Act.
    • Maintain and update case documentation.
    • Attend relevant meetings and community events.
    • Promote the mission and vision of the LDBPI in individual conversations and at events and meetings.
    • Support organizational events like the annual Mother’s Day Walk for Peace, Peace B’Que, and Survivors of Homicide Victims Awareness Month events.

    Qualifications & Skills

    • Minimum 3 years of experience in human services, case management, and/or advocacy.
    • Commitment to LDBPI’s mission, values, and the seven Principles of Peace.
    • Highly organized, resourceful, and proactive with excellent communication skills.
    • Proficient in MS Word, MS Excel, Google applications, and internet research.
    • Strong administrative skills, including record-keeping and data entry.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with diverse populations.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
    • Detail-oriented and capable of managing multiple cases.
    • Ability to motivate and adapt long-term plans for survivors.
    • Possess social and racial justice perspective.
    • Effective decision-making in complex client matters.
    • Strong relationship-building skills with diverse groups.
    • Comfortable seeking supervision and support from colleagues.
    • Tactful, discreet, and possessing sound judgment.
    • Effective public speaking skills.

    Desired Qualifications

    • Experience with the Department of Children & Families.
    • Some formal clinical training and education.
    • Bilingual/multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

    Time Commitment

    • Full-time, 40 hours/week position, including some evening and weekend work.
