    ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO GENERAL HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

    San Francisco General Hospital Foundation (SFGHF) is a dynamic and growing nonprofit fundraising organization dedicated to promoting equity in healthcare for all at the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG). Zuckerberg San Francisco General is the only provider of trauma (Level 1) and 24‐hour psychiatric emergency services for 1.5 million people in San Francisco and northern San Mateo counties.

    A comprehensive medical center, Zuckerberg San Francisco General provides quality health care with compassion and respect to 100,000 inpatient visits and 500,000 outpatient visits per year, including some of San Francisco’s most vulnerable. In addition, Zuckerberg San Francisco General is one of the nation’s top tertiary academic medical centers conducting clinical training and research. In 2016, Zuckerberg San Francisco General opened a new acute care hospital, and the Foundation concluded a successful multi‐million‐dollar capital campaign.

    POSITION OVERVIEW

    Reporting to the Director of Development and as a key member of the Development fundraising team, the Major Gifts Officer (MGO) is responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, securing, and stewarding a robust portfolio of major institutional and individual donors and prospects. The Major Gifts Officer develops and implements a comprehensive gift solicitation plan and tailored strategies for individual and institutional major gifts donor relationship management to meet the Foundation's short- and long-term fundraising goals. Fundraising responsibilities include restricted and unrestricted annual gifts, multi-year gifts, cause-marketing and matching gift partners, and event sponsorship.

    The role’s primary objective is to reach annual revenue goals by developing strong and authentic relationships with institutional and individual donors and prospects; cultivating, soliciting, closing, and stewarding major gifts; and engaging in ongoing, year-round fundraising activity. The MGO is responsible for a portfolio of institutional (primarily corporate) and individual major gift donors and prospects, fully managing the donor lifecycle from lead generation to closing gifts and stewardship.

    This position requires a high degree of organization, focus, and the ability to work independently along with strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal colleagues and external stakeholders alike to achieve optimal results.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Annual Fundraising (50%)

    • Act as Relationship Manager for a portfolio of at least 75 major ($10,000+) institutional and individual donors and qualified prospects and follow portfolio management best practices as directed
    • Conduct effective prospecting:
      • Engage in an ongoing process for identifying and qualifying suspects
      • Elevate select suspects to prospect status using research, community networking, and stakeholder input
      • Conduct strategic outreach to corporate prospects with the major gift capacity and propensity to support SFGHF’s mission
      • Track moves, progress, and conversion success
    • On an appropriate and strategic basis, engage Hospital staff and current and former board members to meet fundraising and engagement goals
    • Work with Events and other colleagues to identify a suite of engagement opportunities meant to bring existing donors and prospects closer to the SFGHF mission
    • Create year-round donor cultivation and stewardship strategies and touchpoints
    • Draft and execute high-quality written materials including cover letters, gift/grant proposals and reports, and other donor correspondence in collaboration with Development leadership
    • Consider organizational objectives and donor interests to design and deploy customized solicitation strategies
    • Support Annual Fund Manager by identifying and pursuing high-quality match opportunities throughout the year
    • Provide Director of Communications with potential partners for cause-marketing programs

    Hearts in SF Corporate Fundraising (40%)

    • Manage all aspects of institutional sponsorship for the Foundation’s annual fundraising event, Hearts in SF
    • Partner with the Hearts in SF Corporate Chair to identify and solicit new prospects and engage past supporters; establish and execute a robust timeline of outreach communications; monitor and course correct event fundraising progress; and develop and implement a post-event donor stewardship plan
    • With input from Director of Development, Associate Director of Development Operations, and Associate Director of Events, design and administer sponsorship benefits, maintaining 501(c)(3) IRS compliance
    • Serve on the Hearts in SF Core Team - provide weekly reports on activities and progress
    • Provide information and support to the Hearts in SF Chairs Committee as needed
    • Maintain database accuracy and utilize Database and Donor Information Manager to provide up-to-date fundraising progress reports to internal and volunteer event leadership
    • Support the Associate Director of Development Operations, Associate Director of Events, and Director of Communications to create compelling event collateral

    Other (10%)

    • Maintain up-to-date donor records in Raiser’s Edge, including opportunities, actions, and donor contact reports, and manage the input of sponsor, donor, attendee, and other event-related constituent data into Raiser’s Edge
    • With guidance from Development Operations, prioritize the tracking, invoicing, and follow-up needed to secure outstanding pledge revenue in a timely manner. Ensure that all gifts are acknowledged in a timely manner
    • Generate donor-centric content for eNews, website, social media, etc.
    • Follow all established processes and best practices as outlined by the Development Operations team
    • Attend and support offsite events including ones supporting donor cultivation and stewardship, community engagement, and external affairs
    • Understand and adhere to basic 501(c)(3) IRS compliance and the Donor Bill of Rights

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
    • A minimum of five years of major gifts experience, with a proven track record of closing five- and six-figure gifts in a complex environment. Prior experience in campaigns is desired but not a requirement.
    • Firsthand experience with donor and prospect research, as well as managing a diverse portfolio of corporate and individual prospects and donors, as primary and secondary manager
    • Proven achievement of building effective, long-term relationships with new and prospective donors in addition to success in retaining and upgrading existing donors
    • Experience in providing tailored support to Board leaders and Committee members
    • Ability to be successful in deadline-oriented settings, both individually and as a collaborative team-player
    • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including comfort dealing with high-net-worth individuals and business leaders
    • Highly organized, metrics-focused, detail oriented, and motivated by ambitious goals and deadlines
    • Ability to manage up and across; collaborative, resourceful and responsive
    • Good judgment, discretion, diplomacy, and respect for confidentiality
    • Knowledge of health care programs, health equity, and public health initiatives a plus
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Raiser’s Edge, and Adobe Acrobat Pro
    • Available and willing to work evenings and weekends (as required)

    This is a hybrid role with a minimum of 2 days in the office per week. As the Foundation is housed within a City of San Francisco building, and we work closely in tandem with our hospital partners, all onsite San Francisco General Hospital Foundation employees are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment (except in cases of a verified medical condition or sincerely held religious belief, and only then if it causes no undue hardship to the organization or is otherwise mandated by state or federal laws).

    SALARY RANGE: $110,000 – 140,000
