    Position Summary:

    The Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a National Cancer Institute supporting clinical trials group, is the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research. The COG unites more than 12,000 experts in childhood cancer at more than 220 leading children’s hospitals, universities, and cancer centers across North America, Australia, and New Zealand in the fight against childhood cancer. Our goal is to cure all children and adolescents with cancer, reduce the short- and long-term complications of cancer treatments, and determine the causes and find ways to prevent childhood cancer.

    COG is seeking a proactive, detail-oriented, and engaged accounting professional for the position of Accounting Manager. As the inaugural Accounting Manager, this role will serve as a key partner to the Controller, overseeing core accounting functions, ensuring financial accuracy, and maintaining compliance with internal policies and external regulations of our non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. This role will contribute to building a high-performance accounting team and shaping the organization’s financial infrastructure.

    The Accounting Manager will manage financial operations, including general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, financial reporting, and support grants and contracts financial management. Additionally, they will collaborate with the Controller to establish best practices in internal controls, process improvements, and compliance with General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), ensuring adherence to GAAP, regulatory requirements, and federal grant standards. The Accounting Manager will ensure accurate and timely reporting, including working with external financial auditors during the annual audit process while assisting the Controller with the production of regular financial reports for executive leadership. As part of a growing financial team, the Accounting Manager will provide leadership in staff development, process optimization, and financial best practices.

    The Accounting Manager will assist the Controller by fostering an ethical culture of accountability, ensuring a strong commitment to performance in accordance with all

    applicable laws, statutes, and best practices. They will promote transparency and integrity within the organization’s financial operations, contributing to the organization's overall mission and long-term success.

    This is an ideal position for an experienced mission-driven accounting and finance professional who is passionate about the mission and eager to contribute to lasting change. The Children’s Oncology Group is a 100% remote employer, though some travel may be required. Employee must reside within the United States.

    Full salary range for this position: $110,142 to $167,403 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $110,142 (minimum) to $138,773 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Financial Management:

    1. Direct daily accounting operations, including general ledger maintenance, journal entries, and reconciliations.
    2. Manage financial reconciliations to ensure data integrity, accuracy and compliance with GAAP and internal policies.
    3. Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statement preparation and reporting.
    4. Support the Controller in preparing various financial analyses and reports for executive leadership.
    5. Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and other regulatory and contractual requirements.

    Grants and Contracts Financial Management:

    1. Support the accounting and reporting requirements for federal and industry grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and sponsor reporting requirements.
    2. Assist in the preparation of grant and contract related financial reports and maintain supporting documentation.
    3. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure proper accounting treatment for restricted and unrestricted funds, aligning with organizational goals.
    4. Work closely with other departments to maintain proper accounting treatment for restricted and unrestricted funds.
    5. Support the Controller in grant budget preparation and monitoring processes.

    Compliance and Audit:

    1. Support the Controller in maintaining compliance with federal regulations, including Uniform Administrative Requirements (2 CFR Part 200) and other federal regulations governing grant funding through monitoring, documentation, and reporting.
    2. Assist in ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to 501(c)(3) organizations; and provide training to relevant staff to ensure compliance.
    3. Lead preparation for external audits, including financial statement audits and single audits, working closely with the Controller and external auditors to provide necessary documentation and responses to inquiries.
    4. Work collaboratively with the Controller and outside auditors to support efforts related to the filing of tax forms and regulatory reports.
    5. Help implement corrective actions for any audit findings and continuously improve internal controls.

    Internal Controls and Process Improvement:

    1. Collaborate with the Controller to develop, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
    2. Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance financial operations, increase efficiency, and support long-term organizational sustainability.
    3. Support the Controller in maintaining and updating accounting policies and procedures documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory and best practice standards.

    Team Collaboration and Leadership:

    1. Serve as the first direct report to the Controller, contributing to the development of a small accounting team.
    2. Establish efficient accounting processes and foster a collaborative, high-performing financial team.
    3. Provide strategic leadership to enhance team performance, streamline financial operations, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
    4. Partner cross-functionally with finance, grants administration, industry studies, and other teams to ensure seamless financial operations.
    5. Provide mentorship and training to accounting and finance staff as the accounting team expands.

    Operations and Systems Management:

    1. Serve as a subject matter expert on the accounting and financial system.
    2. Partner with the Controller and Information Systems staff to identify improvements in financial software applications and databases to enhance the organization's financial performance reporting.
    3. Assist the Controller with the development and maintenance of benchmarking and decision support information systems.

    Other Responsibilities:

    Required Skills and Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline.
    • Minimum of six (6) years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years as an Accounting Manager, preferably within a nonprofit or grant-funded organization.
    • Minimum of 1-3 years of supervisory experience
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles, cost allocation practices, internal controls, and financial management of federal, industry and foundation funding.
    • Proficient with financial analysis and reporting, and accounting cycle.
    • Experience with federal funding, Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards, and Single Audit compliance.
    • Proven ability to mentor, develop, and lead accounting and finance staff within a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
    • Experience with Acumatica, specifically Nonprofit +, or similar cloud-based non-profit accounting systems.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced formula generation skills.
    • Ability to be self-directed, as well as a drive towards collaboration, innovation, and pursuit of creative solutions that advance the mission and impact of the organization.
    • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and time management skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Adaptable and effective in supporting organizational change initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
    • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally to better understand the organization’s operations, proactively identifying opportunities to enhance financial strategies and operational effectiveness.
    • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to translate financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
    • Ability to exercise a high degree of judgment and diplomacy as well as maintaining the highest integrity and ethics.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Certified Public Accounting preferred, but not required
    • Exposure to project management tools such as Monday.com and Smartsheet
    • Knowledge of Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200)
    • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
    • Experience with process improvement and documentation
    • Prior experience in a newly established accounting function or startup-like environment.
