    Reconstructing Judaism seeks a full-time controller to join the staff of our progressive, nonprofit organization. The controller provides financial expertise, assists in the development and implementation of financial strategies in support of our mission, and has primary direct responsibility for accounting operations. The successful candidate will thrive in a deadline-driven environment, work independently, can explain financial information to a variety of audiences, demonstrate impeccable attention to detail, and bring a high degree of accuracy and professionalism to their work. This position receives day-to-day supervision from the Director of Operations with ultimate oversight from the Executive Vice President.

    The Controller position is eligible for hybrid work, with up to two days per week available as work from home if preferred and the remainder performed onsite at our Wyncote, PA campus just outside Philadelphia.

    Position Responsibilities

    1. Manages and executes accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting and budget monitoring, financial projections, banking, payroll, financial reporting, tax review, audit preparation, restricted fund administration, government reporting and auxiliary services.
      • Ensures the accurate and timely processing of all accounting transactions and compliance with federal, state, and educational regulation and GAAP requirements.
      • Maintains copies of all restricted gifts and institutional grants and receivables; reviews all grants to ensure that financial reporting requirements of funders are being met.
      • Establishes new grants in accounting software, produces grant expense reports and prepares financials for grant reporting as needed.
      • Executes the month-end close process.
      • Completes student tuition billing and issues 1098-Ts at year-end.
      • Files 1099s and any additional calendar-year-end tax documents.
      • Prepares monthly payroll and 401k submissions; allocates per person in general ledger; assists with yearly reports for valuation.
      • Ensures compliance for out-of-state payroll tax requirements; establishes out-of-state presence as needed.
      • Oversees regular payments to offsite interns, independent contractors and other non-payroll payees.
    2. Produces monthly and quarterly financial statements, including Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Activities with comparisons to budget, Cash Flow Statement, Rolling Forecast; Drafts accompanying commentary that summarizes significant information.
      • Submits financial reports to senior management and to the Treasurer of the Board of Governors and Finance Committee, explains key results, and answers questions.
      • Updates the restricted balances report monthly and provides support and education for department heads in understanding the availability of purpose-restricted funds.
      • Updates financial data on reporting agency websites as needed.
    3. Advises the Executive Vice President, Director of Operations, President/CEO and/or the Board Treasurer regarding financial matters; helps develop and implement financial policies and procedures.
    4. Prepares the annual budget and periodic forecasts with senior management
    5. Serves as the primary point of contact for external auditors in the completion of the annual financial statement and audit(s).
    6. Supervision of the bookkeeper
    7. Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting (CPA preferred)
    • 7 years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit environment
    • Excellent understanding of GAAP accounting for nonprofits
    • Demonstrated advanced proficiency in Excel (candidates will be required to pass a skills assessment to demonstrate proficiency)
    • Direct experience with Financial Edge or similar software
    • ADP, iSolved or other relevant payroll software experience
    • Bill.com or other online bill payment software experience
    • Demonstrated knowledge of financial reporting and audit support
    • Experience as a supervisor

    Capabilities/Competencies:

    • Ability to read, analyze, interpret and convey complex financial data
    • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting and GAAP
    • Ability to respond effectively to questions and prepare material in response to requests
    • Track record of good judgment and discretion including maintaining confidentiality
    • Superior attention to detail, with excellent analytical skills
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly with tact and professionalism, both verbally and in writing
    • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, self-motivate and manage multiple projects
    • Demonstrated ability to think critically, troubleshoot and resolve problems
    • Highly organized and able to perform well in high-paced environment
    • Ability to foster and maintain positive relationships and work collaboratively with staff, supervisors, and board members
