    Position Title: Senior Staff Attorney

    Classification: Full-Time Exempt Union Position

    Compensation: $100,335 - $113,087 (depending on relevant years of experience which determines placement on the organization’s salary scale), plus generous benefits

    Organizational Background:

    The National Immigration Project is a national membership organization of attorneys, advocates, and community members driven by the belief that all people should be treated with dignity, live freely, and flourish. For over 50 years, the organization has litigated, educated, advocated, and built bridges across movements so that those who are most harmed by the immigration and criminal systems are uplifted and supported.

    Position Overview:

    The National Immigration Project seeks a senior staff attorney to join our team. The senior staff attorney will primarily focus on developing and working on litigation and legal advocacy to support movement and community partners. The attorney may also provide technical assistance, training, written resources, and other support to members and partners in their areas of expertise. The attorney will be a key part of our programs team and will work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure that organizational and movement goals are advanced. Deep expertise in immigration law and the immigration system as well as significant federal litigation experience will be required for this role.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Developing, pursuing, and leading movement-supporting litigation, with particular emphasis on defending policies that provide protection or benefits to groups of immigrants such as youth in the SIJS backlog, workers who have DALE, people facing parole revocation, etc.;
    • Cultivating and maintaining effective relationships with local groups, coalition partners, and policymakers;
    • Identifying and implementing legal and advocacy strategies to advance protections for immigrants;
    • Producing written resource materials for attorneys, community-based organizations, and professional organizations;
    • Analyzing legislative and policy proposals and producing written materials for community groups and policymakers;
    • Representing the National Immigration Project in coalitions and collaborations with partner organizations;
    • Other similar duties.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience: 8 - 12 years of experience in federal litigation, legal advocacy, and movement lawyering. (Significant experience in federal litigation, including leadership role in developing and driving such litigation, is a must.)
    • Skills: Excellent federal litigation, research, writing, and communication skills.
    • Knowledge: Deep knowledge of the immigration system, the INA, and legal issues related to immigration; strong familiarity with the APA and constitutional law.
    • Languages: Proficiency in Spanish highly desirable.
    • Education: J.D. or equivalent, admission to at least one state bar and one federal court.

    Attributes: Community-oriented, proactive, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Highly organized and self-driven.

All National Immigration Project union staff are represented by the National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW), UAW Local 2320, AFL-CIO. This position is fully remote, though occasional travel is required for in-person meetings.
