    About the Human Trafficking Prevention Project

    The Human Trafficking Prevention Project (HTPP) focuses on reducing the collateral consequences of involvement in the criminal and civil legal systems for sex workers, survivors of human trafficking, and those populations put at highest risk of exploitation. The HTPP is a project of Uplift Alliance, and works in partnership with Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service (MVLS), the state's largest provider of pro bono legal services.

    Overview of Position

    Immediate opening for a full-time entry- to mid-level staff attorney with the Human Trafficking Prevention Project (HTPP). The HTPP is seeking a highly motivated candidate with legal and project management skills to provide criminal record relief services to clients, including criminal record expungement, shielding, and vacatur, as well as name and gender marker changes and claims under the Debt Bondage Relief Act. The project also includes significant community outreach, education and training components.

    This position is grant funded and is currently fiscally sponsored by Uplift Alliance. This position requires frequent travel throughout Maryland; valid driver's license required.

    Junior Staff Attorney: Key Responsibilities

    The Junior Staff Attorney will be responsible for:

    • Providing individual representation to sex workers, survivors of trafficking, and those populations put at highest risk of exploitation in criminal record relief cases including, but not limited to, expungement, shielding, vacatur and pardon cases, as well as name and gender marker changes and claims for relief under the Debt Bondage Relief Act;
    • Coordinating and executing the HTPP’s community/client outreach efforts and project activities at community partner agencies in the Baltimore City Metro area;
    • Screening all potential clients for project eligibility, completing intakes for HTPP legal assistance, and making client referrals as appropriate;
    • In coordination with HTPP and MVLS staff, conducting educational presentations, preparing outreach materials, and developing client referral relationships with other service providers;
    • Meeting client intake and case placement goals as required by the grant and established by the HTPP Director;
    • Timely entering of client data in CLIO case management system and ensuring that each client’s case file includes relevant documents and up-to-date case notes;
    • Tracking and reporting efforts for grant reporting purposes, including accurately maintaining necessary records to meet reporting requirements required by the funders; and,
    • Assisting with grant writing and other tasks/projects as needed to further the HTPP’s mission

    Preferred Experience

    The ideal candidate will have:

    • Work, volunteer, and/or lived experience with survivors of human trafficking and/or other populations put at high risk of exploitation, such as those trading sex, living in poverty, experiencing homelessness, and/or struggling with substance use disorder;
    • Work, volunteer, and/or lived community outreach and/or harm reduction experience;
    • Work, volunteer, and/or lived experience navigating public systems, such as the education, child welfare, or juvenile and/or adult criminal legal systems;
    • Experience with legal research, writing, and/or court appearances;
    • Fluency, written and oral, in Spanish;
    • Experience with record-keeping for state and/or federal grants;
    • Familiarity with legal case management software; and/or
    • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
