    SUMMARY OF ADHIKAAR:

    Adhikaar, meaning rights in Nepali, is a New York-based nonprofit organization working with Nepali-speaking communities to promote human rights and social justice for all. Established in 2005, Adhikaar is the only organization providing essential services and mobilizing the Nepali-speaking community in the New York area to raise our voices and take collective action against injustices on issues affecting us through organizing, community education, grassroots advocacy, leadership development, and individual assistance, working in four program areas: workers’ rights, immigrant rights, access to healthcare, and language justice. It is a fast-paced office with many programs going on at once and the right candidate will thrive in such an environment.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Manager of Development & Communications is responsible for overseeing Adhikaar’s overall communications and fundraising work and provides strategic direction and oversight to these bodies of Adhikaar's work. They work with staff, partners, funders, and members to ensure the effective integration of Adhikaar’s vision and goals into all efforts related to fundraising and communications. The Manager of Communications & Development may supervise staff, consultants, interns and volunteers who assist with communications and fundraising.

    The Manager of Development & Communications reports directly to the Co-Executive Director.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Manager of Development & Communications responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    Communications Strategy & Implementation

    • With the Co-Executive Director, oversee Adhikaar’s communications strategy and external/internal communication needs (social media, website, paid media, earned media, database, organizational infrastructure).
    • Story Project: Develop strategy on stories for campaigns, advocacy and organizing with Communications Coordinator and Program Managers, manage and oversee overall story collection system (including the development of stories for specific campaign or development needs, systematization of collection and story editing).
    • Work with Co-Executive Director to develop strategies to advance Adhikaar as a thought leader for the Nepali-speaking community, immigrant, and workers rights.
    • Work with the Communications Coordinator, Development and Research Coordinator, and Operations Coordinator to develop and actively oversee Adhikaar’s contact management system (Powerbase).

    Development Strategy & Implementation

    • Work closely with the Co-Executive Director to provide strategic direction and oversight of Adhikaar’s fundraising plan to cultivate and retain private and corporate funders, government contracts, and individual donors that promote the organization’s mission & principles.
    • Work with the Development Coordinator and oversee all grants including writing proposals, reporting, and ensure all deadlines are met.
    • Conduct email and in-person outreach to current and prospective funders to develop and strengthen partnerships.
    • Monitor government grants portal and ensure all requirements are being met.
    • Prepare a new donor pipeline and cultivate new funders and donors to expand Adhikaar’s fundraising efforts.
    • Maintain regular communications with funders, partners, donors, staff, and board members related to development updates, achievements, and events.
    • Represent Adhikaar at events to promote the organization’s mission, including with funders, target donors, and partners engaged in efforts relevant to Adhikaar’s vision and fundraising goals.
    • Work closely with other Managers/Senior staff to develop strategies to integrate Adhikaar’s goals, vision, and progress into Adhikaar’s fundraising plan.
    • Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, building strong relationships to increase retention and engagement.
    • Coordinate and execute personalized donor communications, ensuring donors are well-informed of the impact of their contributions.

    Leadership, Management & Administration

    • Work with the Co-Executive Directors and senior program staff, provide oversight of Adhikaar’s activities to ensure coordination between programs, communications and development plans so that they meet goals and promote the organization’s mission & principles.
    • Supervise communications staff and fellow(s), interns and volunteers as needed.
    • Oversee the development and implementation of data tracking systems to represent a more holistic and long-term impact of the organization.
    • Explore, assess, and develop additional fundraising strategies such as planned giving.
    • Work closely with Co-Executive Director, other staff, and consultants to identify and seek sources of support, with the focus on grassroots fundraising, individual donor programs, funder reporting requirements and other development efforts.
    • Prepare regular reports on fundraising activities, donor engagement, and event performance for the Management team and Board.
    • Analyze fundraising data in collaboration with the Development Coordinator and Co-Executive Director to evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives and guide future strategies.
    • Remain informed about developments in community-building, racial justice issues, immigration, women, anti-Asian hate to inform proposal development, funder reporting, and relationship development.
    • Remain informed about emerging and best practices in fundraising and nonprofit development.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Required

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Demonstrated commitment to Adhikaar’s mission of human rights and social justice.
    • At least five years experience in advocacy, development and/or communications work, preferably with grassroots organizations.
    • Ideal candidates should possess prior non-profit management experience. Additional education and training in grant writing and/or fundraising (e.g., CFRE, etc.) preferred.
    • Working knowledge of the following software and tools: Google Drive, Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, WordPress, Drupal, Salesforce or similar databases. Able to learn new systems quickly
    • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and a wide variety of professional backgrounds and experiences
    • Strong writing and research skills, excellent proposal writing abilities. Great time management and organizational skills.
    • Excellent analytical skills including experience with quantitative and qualitative data.
    • Ability to work in a team as well as lead independent projects.
    • Strong interpersonal skills leading to productive and positive relationships with staff, trustees, and current and prospective institutional and individual donors.
    • Understanding of all aspects of the donor cycle (i.e., prospecting, cultivation, and stewardship).

    Preferred

    • Strong understanding of philanthropy, the political landscape and political analysis of immigrant rights, workers rights, and gender issues.
    • Educational background in nonprofit development, communications/public relations/media, political science or related field.
    • Skills in Nepali, Hindi and/or Tibetan appreciated but not necessary.

    BENEFITS:

    Salary: $75,000

    This is a hybrid position with work required in the office in Queens, NYC.
