Better Angels is taking a bold, holistic approach to tackling the homelessness epidemic in Los Angeles. We are harnessing new models of intervention, community engagement, advocacy, world-class technology, and a strong dose of pragmatism across five critical areas of need: Prevention, Services, Shelter, Housing and Technology.

Position Summary

The Director of Shelter will play a pivotal role in expanding and optimizing shelter resources to better serve the homeless community. Reporting directly to executive leadership, this director will spearhead initiatives to build a robust Shelter Database, establish relationships with shelter operators, and develop a strategic plan to maximize current shelter capacity. This individual will also guide the buildout of our Shelter Management System and act as a Better Angels ambassador, representing our mission across the ecosystem.

Primary Responsibilities

Build Out Shelter Database

• Develop and maintain a comprehensive database of major shelters, including detailed information on services and capacity (includes in-person and online research).
• Oversee and coordinate a volunteer team responsible for data entry and ongoing maintenance.
• Create and implement processes for regular updates and accuracy checks across the shelter database.

Build a Network of Shelter Operators

• Establish and maintain strong working relationships, including building partnerships with key shelter operators
• Encourage shelter operators to manage their own profiles, helping to keep information up-to-date and relevant.
• Assess individual shelter needs (such as volunteers, supplies, or structural support) to support each operator’s capacity.

Develop a Strategic Shelter Plan

• Analyze current shelter utilization and identify areas for capacity optimization.
• Utilize data insights to pinpoint gaps in shelter availability and develop solutions for equitable access.
• Present data-driven recommendations to Better Angels leadership for system-wide improvements.

Secondary Responsibilities

• In conjunction with Better Angels technology team, oversee the proper buildout and implementation of Better Angels’ Shelter Management System.
• Represent Better Angels at community events, stakeholder meetings, and policy discussions as an expert in shelter operations.
• Serve as a subject matter expert on shelter-related topics, advising both internal teams and external partners.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in shelter management, homeless services, or a related social services role.
• Exceptional research skills with the ability to gather and analyze complex data effectively.
• Strong communication and persuasive abilities, with a track record of building successful partnerships.
• Skilled in strategic planning and process development, with experience managing a team and overseeing operational systems.
• Excellent presentation skills, capable of delivering insights to a range of audiences.
