Job Summary:
The Payroll Accountant is responsible for supervising and coordinating payroll activities to ensure employees are paid accurately, on time, and in full compliance with government regulations, including adherence to multistate tax laws.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Manages payroll systems to ensure the accurate and timely processing of payroll transactions, including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
- Oversees the accurate and prompt processing of payroll updates, such as new hires, terminations, and pay rate adjustments.
- Sets up new hire records in the payroll system.
- Maintains precise and comprehensive records and reports of all payroll transactions.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, wage laws, and industry best practices.
- Supports audits by providing necessary records and documentation to auditors.
- Reviews and suggests improvements to payroll software, systems, and operational procedures.
- Performs additional tasks and responsibilities as needed.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of payroll functions including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
- CPP certification strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of multistate tax compliance including NY, PA, and CA.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel.
- Proficient with payroll software including reporting.
- Works collaboratively and strong commitment to learning.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field required.
- At least three to five years of related experience required including administering multistate payroll.
